PHILOSOPHICAL GROUNDS FOR THE CONTEMPORARY
CONCEPTION OF A HUMAN BEING
*
Problem of man is the eternal fundamental philosophical problem of all times and nations. But at the same time it is perpetually new problem, which reects the level of self-knowledge of culture at every concrete historical variant of philosophic thinking. Because of this, before speaking about various proposed conceptions of a human being it is worth lingering over philosophic grounds which underlie one or another conception of a human being.
As one of the founders of philosophic anthropology Helmut Plesner wrote, every period of history has its own cherished word. Terminology of the eighteenth century expressed itself in the word – progress, terminology of the ninetieth century can be expressed by the word – development. The XX century found a new symbolic expression – notion of life. The author takes this notion as something incontestable, which lies out of any ideology, beyond the God and the State, beyond nature and history. As H.Plesner writes, “In this word the time perceives reverberations of its own strength, dynamism, excitement, demonic enjoyment in unforeseeable future, but at the same time of its own weakness, imsiness, inability for self–abnegation and for life. Guiding by this magic formula inuence of what, beginning from Nietzsche increases, the time follows itself and pursuits itself. Well known philosophy of

life emerged with the aim to imprison new generation, like every new generation nds itself imprisoned by the image, created by philosophy contemporary with it” (1).
But when at the beginning of the twenty rst century, the necessity emerged to write the encyclopedic article “Life” for the Grand Russian Encyclopedia, which now is under way, a number of scientists, which elaborate the problem of life, offered articles with the diversity of understandings of this term. Way of life represented by the preceding philosophy of life didn’t work, it has crashed. It makes us face the problem of proportion between philosophy and science and between principles which underlie them.
Now a signicance of new scientic discoveries in the area of natural and humanitarian sciences for the development of philosophy is beyond any doubt. Every new considerable discovery in science alters in one way or another the form of philosophy.
If it doesn’t take place, philosophy encounters serious problems which were described by Albert Schweitzer when he wrote about profound crisis of culture on boundary between the XIX and XX centuries.
From his stand-point precedent philosophy not only considered and treated the values of culture but it carried them as driving ideas into the public opinion. But then, having ceased to be a laborer toiling diligently at the formation of universal vision of culture, philosophy transformed into retired one, who far away from the world rummages in what is rescued. Philosophy became alien to reality. Vital problems, which interested people and epoch, absolutely didn’t inuence philosophy. The path of philosophy lies apart from the high way of general spiritual life. Without borrowing any incentive from spiritual life, philosophy gave nothing in return. It made A.Schweitzer pronounce a harsh sentence: philosophy is guilty of the crisis of culture at the boundary of centuries. “It was not the guilt of philosophy that thinking was unable to create optimistic–ethic worldview and to nd in it footing for ideals which compose the soul of culture. But philosophy is guilty before our world, because it didn’t reveal the mentioned fact and was going on to remain overpowered by illusions that by its search it contributes indeed to the progress of culture” (2).
All this attests to the importance, actuality and vital character of putting into practice the generating impact of philosophic sets upon formation of the new orientations in science, culture and life.

As Max Scheler wrote – “No task is more urgent now than the one of creating of philosophic anthropology, and our epoch demands of this task to be resolved without delay. I mean the fundamental science about essence and essence structure of man; about his relation to kingdom of nature (inorganic world, plant, animal), to the base of all things; about his metaphysic essence origin and his physical, psychic and spiritual appearance in the world, about forces and powers which move him and are moved by him; about the main directions and laws of his biological, psychical, spiritual – historical and social development, their essential possibilities and their realities. Here falls psycophysiс problem of the body and soul, as well as noethic-vital problem. Only this anthropology could become ultimate philosophic base and at the same time determine precisely the targets of research of all sciences which deal with the subject “man”, that is, sciences of nature and medicine, archaeological, ethnological, historical and social sciences, ordinary and evolutionary psychology and characteriology” (3).
This great synthesis of sciences about man, as it was far-sagacity marked by Max Scheler at the beginning of the XX century, unfortunately was not held. During all the XX century the precipitate differentiations and specialization of sciences about man was going on. New areas of scientic research concerning man came into life. Interdisciplinary character in research of man prevailed over complexity, systematic character of research of man as one, indivisible, multileveled and nonlinear, physically, psychologically and spiritually integral subject of cognition.
The integral philosophic well reected character of the problem of essence and of nature of man in the form of philosophical anthropology was present de jure but not de facto. It was represented by archetypes of analytic linear philosophic thought belonging to the epoch that came away.
“Philosophy”, being directly translated from Greek, means love for wisdom. But what is wisdom? It is supposed to be not only ability to reect on the ultimate bases of existence and cognition, as is usually represented as the main feature of philosophy. It is as well the ability to appreciate these ultimate bases from stand-points of self-awareness of culture at a concrete historical period. Philosophical knowledge is always historical and changeable, albeit directed to cognition of fundamental bases of existence and principles of its cognition. Nowhere is
275
more pertinent to recall famous Hegel’s maxim: “Philosophy is epoch xed in thought”. When philosophers forget this historical character of philosophic consciousness, philosophy breaks away from real life, doesn’t take any incentives from it and doesn’t give anything in return. It was written just about this by Albert Schweitzer at the boundary between the XIX and XX centuries when he put the main responsibility on philosophy for decline of the culture of that time.
Doesn’t some analogy with our time suggest itself? Again we live in conditions of profound, system crisis. Again all habitual civilizational trends and codes which during long time determined the norms of evolution are crashing. And again philosophy reacts languidly and inertly upon the challenges of the time, again it doesn’t adjust itself according to these challenges and doesn’t respond to them.
In the long list of problems, evoked to life by our times, the places at foreground are taken by problems, emerged on the base of development of scientic knowledge and, rst of all, of knowledge obtained by science about life and man. It is worth to be mentioned, that at the Dusseldorf World philosophic Congress as far back as in 1978 the rst section of Congress discussed a thesis: “Biology and its challenge to philosophy”. Thirty years passed from this event. The challenges, coming from all complexity of sciences about living, have increased enormously. Now, not only scientic literature but all mass media is full of discussions on cloning and death lethal injections, on manipulations with stem cells etc. But philosophical knowledge doesn’t have actually replies to all these challenges. Naturally, the responses shouldn’t be rigidly pragmatic, rather they should be profoundly philosophic, indicating (with taking into account the similar challenges) how the actual ontological, cognitive and evaluative philosophical sets can be modied. F. Fucuiama in his work “Our post-human future” noted, when considering the biotechnical revolution which goes on today, that this revolution is not simple break or acceleration of the routine course of life. It gives rise to situation when the future of humankind proves to be open, unpredestined, dependable entirely on our decisions and doings. These decisions and doings cannot be easily undertaken on the base of existing archetypes of philosophical knowledge, which reect traditionally the way passed by civilization in its evolution and are not ready for pioneering (or discussion) of the new innovative perspectives.
276
Therefore one of the most insistent tasks of philosophic comprehension of the world of the living is the one of creation of integral image of man in all his manifestations and realizations. Philosophy of man cannot be presented by preliminarily stored set of methodological problems or of methodological means of research. It should be made as a concrete historical formation dependable on currents as from above (from the determined level of modern methodological culture) so from beneath (from elaborated till recent period knowledge about man). It is deduced directly from these two components and is singled out as an element, as a side of reality, created in the course of scientic research. Contemporary philosophy, as distinct from naturphilosophy, considers its object as not isolated from the concrete forms of cognition, but as its result, as the outcome of interaction between subject and object of nature. Philosophy deals with the “second reality” generated by science, that is, with outcome of study of laws of man’s existence in a new reality, which undergoes the changes according to evolution of sciences about man.
Taking into account the multilateral character of problem, its versatility and nonlinear character we’ll outline the main directions of its resolving. From our stand-point, responses of philosophy to challenges of contemporary sciences about life and man should be reected in transformation of recently acting ontological, methodological and axiological sets.
In ontological aspect, the special attention should be attracted to research of ontological schemes represented as in the various sciences so in the various directions of the one and same science. Recent natural science deals with variety of patterns of nature, ontologically explanative schemes often not associated with each other. It originates the failure to understand various patterns of the world offered by various elds of scientic knowledge and makes them incompatible. For example, in biology the gap between evolutional, organizational and functional approaches for research of living is not yet bridged.
The task of transformation of ontological direction concerning the responses to challenges of biology looms in form of discovering of ontological models which underlie various parts of contemporary science about life and man. Painstaking reection should be applied for comprehension of their essence, of their correlations, of their rationalization and making in order.

This work is to be resulted in new comprehension of nature, liberated from naturephilosophical representations of nature that exists outside of man and independently of him.
The ideas of global evolutionism, coevolution, man-commensurability of principles of the sciences about nature, can be considered as fundamental abstractions which consolidate new conceptions of philosophy of nature.
Philosophy of nature as some world scheme, typical for naturephilosophy, is being transformed into philosophical reections of man who exists in natural environment and is involved in complicated correlations with nature. Nature is brought into a system of human activity and cannot be conceived out of these correlations, out of historical sphere of culture.
On methodological plane, transformation of philosophical knowledge, under pressure of real facts of sciences about man, must contribute to comprehension: how new methodological constructive unit can drive to innovative way out of connes of existing standards. Comprehension and formulation of new methodological principles, which have generating character, usually drove to the establishment of a new pattern of reality. It brightly appeared with installation of new sets of integrity, organization, evolution and systemic character in sciences about life. Now we have in agenda installation of the new cognitive constructive mechanism - coevolution which reects the tendency of coupling of organization and evolution of living systems. Idea of coevolution may become new paradigmical set of the XX century’s culture. It may establish new perspectives for synthesis natural and social sciences, overcome restricting character of naturalism, sociologism and historicism, unite alternative strategies of elementarism and systems, evolutionism and structuralism.
Very important changes are supposed to take place in the sphere of axiology. All civilizational sets of technogenic society which are oriented on the idea of progress, assume factor of competition, contestation, mutual ghting, as driving factor of progress, referring herein to Darwin’s thesis about struggle for existence. However, in biology long ago is proved the alternativity of this position. So, rstly Russian scientist K.F.Kesler, after him P.A.Kropotkin and others, paid attention to the fact that very often not those who are physically stronger and more aggressive turned out to be the most adapted, but those who better
278
unite with each other, come to cooperation, help to each other. It gave rise to creation of conception according to what mutual help comes forward as driving factor of evolution and engine of progress. This position nds support in modern literature (B.L.Astaurov, V.P.Efroimson, L.V.Krushinskij and others). Contemporary physiologist of bacteria academician G.A.Zavarzin, when criticizing market conception of competition, asserts: the main thesis of anti-market conception – fundamental position of organism in trophic system supposes mainly cooperation, but not competition (4).
It’s difcult to overestimate the importance of ideas which were transfered from the sphere of biology to the sphere of socium and xed by the well reected philosophical thought. All above said instills the hope that with orientation to the new philosophical grounds in doctrine of man, which now are in the process of formation, new principles of the theory of man will be set. New synthetic motives can arise contributing, from the contemporary stand-point, to integral, systemic and nonlinear view of man.
