Our planet Earth is only a tiny part of the universe, but nowadays it's the only place where we can live. People always polluted their surroundings. But until now pollution was not such a serious problem. People lived in rural areas and did not produce such amount of polluting agents that would cause a dangerous situation in global scale. With the development of overcrowded industrial highly developed cities, which put huge amounts of pollutants into surrounds, the problem has become more and more dangerous. Today our planet is in serious danger. Acid rains, global warming, air and water pollution, and overpopulation are the problems that threaten human lives on the Earth.
In order to understand how air pollution affects our body, we must understand exactly what this pollution is. The pollutants that harm our respiratory system are known as particulates. Particulates are the small solid particles that you can see through rays of sunlight. They are products of incomplete combustion in engines, for example: internal-combustion engines, road dust and wood smoke. Billions of tons of coal and oil are consumed around the world every year. When these fuels are burnt, they produce smoke and other by-products, which is emitted into the atmosphere. Although wind and rain occasionally wash away the smoke, given off by power plants and automobiles, but it is not enough. These chemical compounds undergo a series of chemical reactions in the presence of sunlight; as a result we have smog, mixture of fog and smoke. While such pollutants as particulates we can see, other harmful ones are not visible.
42
Among the most dangerous things for health are carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide and ozone or active oxygen. Factories emit tons of harmful chemicals. These emissions have disastrous consequences for our planet. They are the main reason for the greenhouse effect and acid rains. Our forests are disappearing because they are cut down or burnt. If this trend continues, one day we won't have enough oxygen to breathe, we won't see a beautiful green forest at all. The seas are in danger. Every ten minutes one kind of animal, plant or insect dies out forever. If nothing is done about it, one million species that are alive today may soon become extinct.

Задания
1. Составьте конспект о случаях употребления эквивалентов модальных глаголов: to be to, to have to
саn may must ought
После глаголов can, must, may инфинитив стоит без частицы to, после глагола ought инфинитив стоит с частицей to:
He can write well.
She may come in.
43
The Verb can
1) Форму настоящего времени: I can we саn you саn he, she, it can they can
I could we could you could
he, she, it could they could
I shall be able to tell you about it only tomorrow.
She has not been able to come to school for a whole week.
She can speak English quite well now. Can she play the piano? — Yes, she can.
The Verb may
I may we may
— you may
he, she, it may they may
I might we might
— you might
he, she, it might they might
You will be allowed to smoke in that room.
44
I have not been allowed to talk for at least twenty minutes.
May I come in? — Yes, you may.
Не might go away after the lesson. But he didn't want to.
The Verb must
I must we must
you must
he, she, it must they must
I had to get up at seven.
She will have to go with me.
You must speak English with your friends.
I mustn't stay here long.
The Verb ought
I ought we ought
— you ought
he, she, it ought they ought
Perfect Infinitive
I ought to visit my sick friend more often.
The Verbs shall and will
You shall go there at once!
Не shall be punished.
I will help him.
We will go on foot.
На употреблении глаголов shall и will как модальных глаголов основан известный анекдот о тонущем иностранце, которого не хотели спасать окружающие, так как он, плохо разбираясь в значении глаголов shall и will,якобы кричал: "I will be drowned, I will be drowned, and nobody shall save me," т. е. — вместо „Я утону, я утону, и никто меня не спасёт!", что звучало бы по-английски: "I shall be drowned, I shall be drowned, and nobody will
save me!"
The Verbs should and would
You should speak more distinctly.
We should have consulted the dictionary first.
We asked her several times but she would keep silence.
Would you mind telling me the time?
Глаголы may (might), а также глаголы should, would в английском языке употребляются ещё в качестве вспомогательных глаголов наклонения (modal auxiliaries) для образования аналитических форм сослагательного наклонении.
46
Глаголы to have, to be являются эквивалентами модального глагола must.
I shall have to work in the reading room today because I haven’t got the textbook at home.
We are to do this experiment today. We were to meet at 5 o’clock yesterday.

Every year millions of tourists visit Russia. There are many different reasons for travelling to Russia. First of all, it is the largest country in the world. Secondly, it is full of historical, architectural and natural wonders. Thirdly, Russia is a hospitable country, where visitors can easily feel at home. According to national traditions guests are always welcomed with bread and salt.
With the population over 140 million people, Russia spans eleven time zones and two continents. The culture of the country contains western and eastern features. A visit to Russia can become a fascinating adventure. The cities that one should definitely visit include Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Sochi, Rostov-on-Don, and, of course,
the “Golden Ring” towns. These places will help to learn more about rich
Russian history. There are lots of museums, art galleries, historical monuments, ancient cathedrals, palaces of the czars. Russia is in many ways a wonderful country with a long and interesting history with many tragic reversals. But what do we really know about our homeland?
What Russia is famous for, except that it is the biggest country in the world? To list all the achievements of our country, we would probably need a multi-volume partition encyclopedia, because our success affects many areas of life.
Many outstanding discoveries were made by the great Russian scientists: D.I. Mendeleev, A.S. Popov, K.E. Tsiolkovsky, A.D. Sakharov and others. The soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man to

master outer space. Books by A.S. Pushkin, M.Lomonosov, F.M. Dostoevsky, A.P. Chekhov and other Russian writers, poets and philosophers are known and read by people all over the world. Russian ballet is rightly regarded as the pinnacle of the world ballet and a hallmark of our country. Russia became the place of birth and creative work of such classical composers as P. I. Tchaikovsky, N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov, M. I. Glinka, and others.
Merits of our country are really big and multifaceted, and Russian people have a lot to be proud of. However, the greatest achievement of Russia is the victory in the Great Patriotic War. Despite all the hardships endured by our people in this severe period, they could stand out and defend our homeland.

Мy Home Town
There are many beautiful cities and towns in the world. I would like to visit some of them, to see with my own eyes what I have read or heard about. But there is no place like home. I love my native city. I was born
here and live with my parents. It’s not the capital, but it is a wonderful
place to live.
My city is old and modern at the same time. It is old because it was founded in the 11th century. At that time its streets were narrow, dark and dirty. Now my city looks modern because of its architecture. Almost all the buildings were built after the war. The streets and avenues are wide and clean.
