Hello! My name is Alex Ivanov. I was born in 1998 in the seaman’s family in
Lugansk. At that time my father was the Second Officer, now he is the Master of a
big cargo ship. My mother is a teacher. She works at school. She teaches English.
I’ve got a brother. My brother is 2 years younger than me. When we were
schoolboys, we used to help our mother about the house as she had a lot of work to
do at school and usually came home late in the evening. We cleaned the flat, washed
up and went shopping.
At the age of seven I went to school. I did well at school. I was good at
mathematics, geography and English. We had a very good nautical club at school and
I attended classes there. In the club we learnt how to row and to navigate small
sailing boats. We defined the ships’ position and plotted their route on charts.
My training in the club did me a lot of good. When I finished school, my father
advised me to become a seaman and followed his advice.
I started college in 2015 and studied there for four years. I studied at the
navigation department. My favorite subject at college was navigation. I took an active
part in the social life of the college. During my study at college I had a long
shipboard training. I visited a lot of countries such as Turkey, Spain, Greece and
many others. I learnt how to navigate a ship, use life-saving appliances, handle ropes
and make entries into the log-book. It was a very useful experience.
After I graduated from college, I started my work at sea. Now I’m an AB on a
big containership and hope to become a Third Officer soon.

MODAL VERBS СAN, MAY, MUST, NEEDN’T
Модальные глаголы, в отличие от других глаголов, обозначают не само
действие, а отношение к нему (возможность, невозможность, способность,
необходимость, разрешение, вероятность) выполнения действия. Они всегда
употребляются в паре со смысловым глаголом. Модальные глаголы can, may,
must не изменяются ни по лицам, ни по числам. После модальных глаголов can,
may, must, needn’t употребляется инфинитив глагола без частицы to.

The ship’s crew
There is a lot of complex equipment on board modern ships so it is necessary to
have skilled and well-qualified crews to operate the ship. A ship’s crew can generally
be divided into three main departments:
• deck department
• engine department
• catering department
The Master (Captain) is in command of the ship. He is a representative of the
shipping company on board. The Master has overall responsibility for seaworthiness

and economical operation of his vessel, and for the safety of all personnel, cargo and
equipment on board. He must be an experienced navigator. It is the highest level of
professional qualification among mariners. He has full authority over all persons on
board his vessel even if higher-ranking persons are on board.
The deck Department is the organizational unit on board merchant ships. It
usually includes navigators, radio officers, a boatswain and some sailors. The main
work of the deck department is watchkeeping and maintenance of the ship’s hull,
cargo gear and accommodations as well as the ship’s life- saving and fire-fighting
appliances. The navigators are deck officers and they report to the master. They keep
watch on the navigating bridge and relieve each other every four hours. A navigator
may not leave the bridge while on watch. Every navigator must know how to define
the ship’s position, plot the ship’s course on charts, take bearings and maintain all
the navigational equipment of the bridge as well as communication devices.
The Chief Officer (Mate) is the head of the deck department and the Master’s
main assistant. He must be always ready to replace the Master and perform his duties.
His responsibilities are the vessel’s cargo operations, her stability and supervising the
deck crew. The Chief Mate is responsible for the security of the ship and the crew on
board. He also trains the crew and the cadets on various aspects like safety,
firefighting, search and rescue.
The Second Officer (Mate) of a merchant vessel is in charge of navigation.
The Second Mate is responsible for maintaining the charts and navigational
equipment on the bridge. He usually draws up the voyage plan under the direction of
the ship’s Master.
The Third Officer (Mate) is usually the junior officer of the ship. However,
on big ships, the position of the Fourth Officer may also be available. The Third
Officer is usually the safety officer because he is in charge of firefighting equipment,
lifesaving appliances and emergency systems.
The boatswain (bosun) is a senior deck rating. He is responsible for the work
and initial discipline of the deck ratings, keeping the ship’s hull, holds and tackle in
good condition, assisting in mooring and anchoring operations, control and
distribution of all deck stores and paints.
