Orthodontics
Orthodontia (ortho = straight, dont = tooth) is the study dealing with the
prevention and correction of abnormally positioned or misaligned teeth. The dentist specializing in this practice, the orthodontist, is concerned with the causes and treatment of malocclusion.
Orthodontics is an old speciality that has undergone dramatic changes during the last 50 years, from being a discipline aimed at treating malocclusions in children to being a discipline aimed at treating patients irrespective of age. Who are the prospective orthodontic patients? Where do they come from? Why do they come for treatment? Indeed, they make up a miscellaneous collection of individuals of varying ages, with different types of malocclusions, with different family histories and with different social and cultural backgrounds. They can be divided into the following categories that correspond with their special problems: children and teenagers, adults, children with cleft-lip-palate defects and children with disabilities. The largest group consists of children and teenagers about 70% of whom are estimated to have some type of malocclusion or tooth anomaly. Treatment depends upon the anomaly and some diagnosed at an early age have anomalies that may self-correct, while others can get worse.
Dr. Edward Angle, also known as the father of modern orthodontics divided malocclusion into three classifications:
1. neutroclusion: Class I condition in which the anteroposterior occlusal positions of the teeth or the mesiodistal positions are normal but other malocclusion or positioning of the individual teeth occurs.
66
2. distoclusion: Class II condition in which the mesiobuccal cusp of the maxillary first molar is anterior to the buccal groove of the mandibular first molar, resulting in an appearance of a retruded mandible.
3. mesioclusion: Class III condition in which the mesiobuccal cusp of the maxillary first molar occludes in the interdental space of the mandibular permanent
first molar’s distal cusp and the mesial cusp of the mandibular permanent second
molar, resulting in an appearance of a protruded mandible.
Malocclusion occurs from diverse causes and in various forms. Causes include trauma, habits, poor mouth conditions or congenital factors such as supernumerary teeth or ectopic eruption of teeth.
Diagnosing the type of malocclusion to enable the identification of subsequent treatment depends upon a thorough exam that includes a clinical exam, patient history, intraoral and extraoral photos, impressions for diagnostic casts and periapical, occlusal, panoramic and cephalometric radiographs.
Treatment of malocclusion is accomplished by applying forces through an intraoral or an extraoral source or a combination of both. They may be fixed or
removable. The most common orthodontic appliances, known as “braces” are fixed
bands or brackets to which auxiliary devices are applied.
Essential orthodontics implies a knowledge of classification of malocclusions and dental anomalies and knowledge of craniofacial growth and development and the ability to examine and communicate with the prospective orthodontic patient regarding the diversity of the orthodontic panorama.

Ancient History
Interest in orthodontics can be traced all the way back to ancient civilizations over 3000 years ago.
As early as 400-300 BC, Greek philosophers like Hippocrates and Aristotle were already exploring ways in which tooth position could be improved. Ancient Egyptian, Roman, and Etruscan tombs have revealed people of importance, such as Cleopatra, being buried with wires secured to their teeth to keep them in place in the afterlife. Similar discoveries have found
