Ourpurposeinwritingthisbookis tohelpyou,thesecondyear student,toeliminatesomeoftheobstaclestosuccessintakingapracticalPhoneticscourseattheuniversitylevel.Overtheyears,wehave identiedmanyofthefactorsthatwebelievespellsuccessinpronunciation improvement as well as general speech and communication techniquesintheEnglishlanguage.
This book reects our positive experience of over ten years of teachingaspecializedPhoneticscoursetohundredsofstudentswhose aspirations have been to become successful language teachers. We havepooledourknowledge,ourexperience,andthematerialstoprovideapracticalmanualthatcapitalizesonthesuccessfactors.Inthis bookweofferyou things we dothatwork: carefully developedand selectedspecicmaterialsandapproachesweusethathaveprovento beeffectiveintheclassroom.
Thecourseworkisarrangedwithintheframeworkofthreemodules.
  focuses on enriching the students’ linguistic competenceandpresupposestheirfurtherstudyofthesoundsystemofthe Englishlanguageatsegmentalandsupersegmentallevels.Themajor objectiveistodevelop the learners’understandingthatpronouncing everywordcorrectlyleadstopoorpronunciation!English is a timestressedlanguage.Englishpronunciationfocusesonspecicstressed wordswhilequicklyglidingovertheother,non-stressed,words.Thus, itisimportantforthestudentatthisstagetoacquirecertainhabitsof uentconnectedspeechandmastertheelementsoflinking,contraction,reductionandassimilation.
concentrateson thedevelopingofthecommunicative competenceof the student. Through asystematic study ofthe functional meaning of various intonation patterns students will acquire skillsof extemporaneous andspontaneous use ofthem in simulated conversations.Besides,studentswillhave a chance to developtheir skills of expressing themselves in the conversational style through masteringspecialcommunicationtechniquesofencouragingconver-

sation,redirectingconversation,interruptingconversation,etc.Much attentionwillbegiventothedevelopingagoodcommunicator’sskills insituationsofentertainingthelistener,i.e.howtoinformthelistener ofyour intention totell an anecdote; what informationis needed to setthescene;howtoreporttheconversation-directorindirectspeech.
Going solo is very important for a teacher-to-be, but as actual communicationoftenhappenswiththeinvolvementofagreaternumberofparticipants,theauthorsregardedittopimportanttoexposethe learnertosituationsofduetsandround-tabletalks.Specialemphasis isgiventotheuseofappropriatemelodicalcontourswhileperforming therolesofinitiator,opponentormoderator.
  concerns professional speech improvement and elementsofpublicspeaking.Weconsiderithighlyimportanttohelpthe student avoid situations of professional embarrassment when their voiceanddictionmightfailthem.That’swhynumerousactivitiesfor thedevelopmentof artisticreadingandspeakingtotheaudienceare includedintothecourse.Studentswillhavepracticeindeliveringtalks in the informational-conversational as well as declamatory styles: readingnewssnippets,tellinganecdotesandjokeswithavariedpurpose of entertaining the listener, introducing the speaker, making a speech,givingatalkinthemannerofanarration-speculation,poetry recitation.
Wehopethatbytheendofthecourseyouwillnotonlyimprove yourpronunciation,butyouwillalsogainmoreself-condenceand becomemoreeffectivespeakersofEnglish.
