Introduction

UNIT 1
History of Psychology
Psychology vs Psychiatry
Psychology [saɪˈkɒləʤɪ]
Psychiatry [ saɪˈkaɪətrɪ]
Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and behavior. It
explores how people think, feel, and act both individually and in groups.
Psychology seeks to understand mental processes, emotions, motivation, perception,
personality, and development throughout the lifespan.
As a science, it combines theoretical knowledge with empirical research methods to
explain and predict human behavior, as well as to promote mental health and well-
being.
Psychiatry is a branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis,
treatment, and prevention of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders.
It studies the biological, psychological, and social factors that contribute to
mental illness.
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication and use various
therapeutic approaches, including psychotherapy, to help patients achieve mental
stability and improve quality of life.

1. Read the text and choose the best summary
A. The text describes how psychology developed as a branch of philosophy.
B. The text explains the historical roots of clinical psychology and how early
ideas shaped modern psychotherapy.
C. The text discusses only Freud’s and Jung’s ideas.
THE ORIGINS OF CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
The history of psychology is deeply rooted in philosophy and medicine. In
Ancient Greece, thinkers such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle explored the
nature of the psyche, meaning “soul” or “mind.” Hippocrates, often called the
father of medicine, proposed that mental states were influenced by bodily
humors. This idea — that the body and mind are connected — became a
cornerstone for future clinical approaches.
During the Middle Ages, mental illness was often viewed through a
religious or moral lens, with explanations involving possession or sin. However,
early physicians began to suggest that mental disturbances might have natural
causes. By the Renaissance, scholars like René Descartes reintroduced the idea
of dualism — the separation between mind and body — while others
emphasized observation and human experience.
In the 19th century, psychology began to emerge as an independent
scientific discipline. Wilhelm Wundt established the first psychology laboratory

9
in 1879, focusing on introspection — the study of conscious experience. William
James in the United States developed functionalism, emphasizing the purpose of
mental processes in helping humans adapt to their environment.
At the turn of the 20th century, psychology took a deeply clinical direction
with the rise of psychoanalysis, founded by Sigmund Freud. Freud proposed that
human behavior is driven by unconscious conflicts and early childhood
experiences. He introduced concepts such as the id, ego, and superego, as well
as defense mechanisms like repression and denial. Freud’s methods of free
association and dream analysis became central to early psychotherapy and
remain influential in clinical practice today.
One of Freud’s most important followers — and later critics — was Carl
Jung. Jung expanded psychoanalysis into what he called analytical psychology.
He introduced the concept of the collective unconscious — a shared layer of the
human psyche containing universal symbols known as archetypes. Jung also
emphasized individuation, the process of integrating different aspects of the
personality to achieve psychological balance. His ideas strongly influenced
modern psychotherapy, art therapy, and the understanding of human
symbolism.
Thus, from philosophical reflection to medical science, the development
of psychology — and especially clinical psychology — represents a continuous
search to understand and heal the human mind.
