data.
Computers use a combination of hardware and software. 2) ………..is
any physical part of the computer, which includes all the
3)………..components and also the 4) …………parts like the monitor
and keyboard. 5) ………….. is any set of instructions that tells the
hardware what to do, such as a web browser, media player or word
processor.
When most people say ‘computer’, they are talking about a 6) ………..
computer. This can be a desktop computer or a 7) …………., which has
basically the same capabilities but in a more 8) ……….. package.

5. Read the text about different computer systems and define the
type of the computer using the information from the text:
1. a portable computer that integrates a processor, a display, a keyboard,
a pointing device and has the same power as a desktop computer;
2. a relatively small computer fitted into different pieces of clothing;
3. a handheld device that can be used as a cell phone, a web explorer
and for storing notes, addresses, etc;
4. a large and powerful computer often connected to hundreds of
terminals and used for intensive data processing;
5. a typical personal computer used at home and as a workstation for
group work.
Supercomputers are considered to be the fastest, the most expensive
and the most powerful in terms of performance and data processing.
These huge computers use a great number of CPUs at the same time for
solving one task. Supercomputers are used for research purposes,
weather forecasting, earthquakes studies, nuclear weapon testing.
Mainframes are similar to supercomputers in many aspects. The
main difference between them is the fact that a supercomputer uses all
its power to focus on very few tasks, while a mainframe purpose is to
perform thousands or millions of operations at the same time. The
central system of a mainframe is connected to hundreds of terminals in a
network.
A computer designed for general use by an individual is a personal
computer or PC. A PC can be supplied with a monitor, a keyboard, a
5

mouse and other input-output devices, computer memory in the form of
RAM and a power supply unit. This computer is the best choice for
single-user tasks. Personal computers can be generally classified by size
and chassis ['ʃæsɪ] or case.
A PC which is placed on a permanent location is a desktop computer.
A desktop PC usually has a vertical chassis called a tower. There are
also all-in-one desktop computers. An All-in-One computer takes all the
desktop computer's internal hardware components and builds them into
the same case that houses the monitor. It is slim and compact. Then
there are portable computers that are small enough to carry. They
include a laptop, a tablet, a smartphone and a wearable computer. A
laptop contains everything that a desktop computer has. They have a
liquid crystal display, an inbuilt keyboard, a touch pad operating as a
mouse. Battery packs that come with laptops let a person use them when
there are no electrical outlets available.
A tablet PC is the latest product of the computer industry. It looks
like a book. Users control a tablet by using its touchscreen with multitouch technology similar to a smartphone or they can use a stylus to
select items, draw pictures, etc. Almost all tablet computers can access
the Internet using Wi-Fi, and many can use mobile phone networks.
They also support handwriting recognition.
A smartphone is a mobile phone that can do more than other phones.
They can do multitasking, running more than one program. Their uses
include: sending and receiving emails, text and multimedia messages,
registering contacts, browsing the Internet, playing games, paying for
goods or services, creating high quality photographs or video and many
more.
A wearable computer is a small computing device you can wear on
your body: on your wrist (e.g. fitness trackers), hung from your neck
(like a necklace), strapped to your arm or leg or on your head (as glasses
or a helmet). Wearable computers have various technical features
common to other mobile computers, such as batteries, software
architectures, wireless area network and data management. Many
wearable computers are active all the time, it means they process or
record data continuously.
