The application software is an essential component of every computer
system. The application software is usually referred to as application
programs or apps.
Application programs allow a user to do specific tasks. For example, if
you have to write a document, you can use the application software
program Microsoft Word. If you want to listen to music, you can use
iTunes. To surf the web, you can use Internet Explorer or Firefox. Even
a computer game can be considered application software. When you
open an application, it runs inside the operating system until you close
it.
Application software can be divided into two main groups: general
purpose applications and custom-made applications. General purpose
apps include software used for writing e-mails and documents, music
players for listening to music and media players for watching movies.
These apps are cheaper than custom-made software because they are
addressed to a large number of people. One of the most commonly used
general purpose applications includes Microsoft Office.
The custom-made applications are developed to meet the requirements
of a specific user. Such applications are usually designed for a large
organization to manage its business operations. Developing a tailormade application is rather expensive.
The application software can also be classified according to the
platforms and technology used. There are desktop apps, mobile apps,

web apps and cloud based apps. The desktop applications are developed

A web application is a computer program that can be accessed through a
web browser on any computing device. Web applications include online
forms, shopping carts, word processors, spreadsheets, video and photo
editing, file scanning, and email programs such as Gmail, Yahoo.
Popular applications include Google Apps. Web applications run on
multiple platforms regardless of OS or device as long as the browser is
compatible.

Internet servers make the Internet possible. All of the machines on
the Internet are either servers or clients. The machines that provide
services to other machines are servers. And the machines that are used
to connect to those services are clients. There are Web servers, e-mail
servers, FTP (File Transfer Protocol) servers and so on serving the
needs of Internet users all over the world. Any server machine makes its
services available using numbered ports -- one for each service that is
available on the server. For example, if a server machine is running a
Web server and a file transfer protocol (FTP) server, the Web server will
be available on port 80, and the FTP server will be available on port 21.
Clients connect to a service at a specific IP address and on a specific
port number.
When you want to send a message or retrieve information from
another computer, your request goes out over the network,
hitting domain name servers (DNS) along the way to find the target
server. The DNS points the request in the right direction. Once the target
server receives the request, it will send a response back to your
computer. DNS is a system of matching names with numbers. It helps
convert easy-to-understand domain names like "hotmail.com" into an

Internet Protocol (IP) address, such as 70.52.251.42 that computers use
to identify each other on the network.
The DNS concept is like a phone book for the internet. Computers
and other network devices on the internet use an IP address to route
your request to the site you're trying to reach. This is similar to dialing a
phone number to connect to the person you're trying to call. Thanks to
DNS, though, you don't have to keep your own address book of IP
addresses. Instead, you just connect through a domain name server,
which manages a massive database that maps domain names to IP
addresses.
Without DNS servers, the internet would shut down very quickly. But
how does your computer know what DNS server to use? When you
connect to your home network, internet service provider or Wi-Fi
network, the modem or router that assigns your computer's network
address also sends some important network configuration information to
your computer or mobile device. That configuration includes one or
more DNS servers that the device should use when translating DNS
names to IP address.
Domain names are represented as strings of characters separated by
dots. The last word in a domain name represents a top-level domain.
There are more than 1,000 top-level domains, and here are some of the
most common:
.COM — commercial websites, though open to everyone
.NET — network websites, though open to everyone
.ORG — non-profit organization websites, though open to everyone
.EDU — restricted to schools and educational organizations
You cannot buy a domain name. Instead, you pay for the right to use a
domain name for one or more years.
