• слова a headache, a cold сопровождаются неопределенным артиклем. Как правило, названия болезней обычно считаются неис числяемыми, например, disease, chickenpox, measles, flu, diabetes, cancer и др., хотя типы болезней употребляются в английском языке во множественном числе: cancercancers («рак» — «виды рака»);
• названия наук / дисциплин — неисчисляемые существительные, поэтому употребляются без артикля: chemistry, mathematics;

deficit, cross-sectional reduction, short-term effects, clinical prediction, cerebral hemisphere.
contact, a range of years, stability of function, recognition memory, specialty approach.
stability, to conduct a research, to follow a model, to obtain data, to meet needs, to have effects.
42
(глагол): tests misidentify, reports include, differences exist, maturation continues, rules vary, survey shows.
11. Write down as many collocations as possible
using the words below.
model studies selection injury factors acquisition recovery common complete use acquisition data aging use test normative certain brain intrusive multiple fixed dynamic brain measures skill blood damage approach require include provide

1. Read the text.
2. Fill in the gaps with the words given below:
neurobehavioral functions, function, sociocultural influences,
advanced, empirical bases, settings
3. Find arguments in the article that support the idea that:
a) neuropsychology is a diversified specialty;
b) interest in the behavioral sequelae of cerebral dysfunction in children has been thriving.
The specialty of neuropsychology includes individuals employed
in varied clinical and research 1 ... who have diverse educational
and training backgrounds. This diversity of conceptual perspectives,
theoretical biases, and practical experiences strengthens the field
and provides strong clinical and 2 ... bases for advancing
research and improving clinical proficiency. Within the broader
field of neuropsychology are those who share a common desire
to contribute to the understanding of 3 ... of the infant, child, and
adolescent. For these child neuropsychologists, developmental
issues are of central importance, along with an appreciation for
the genetic, medical, environmental, behavioral, and 4 ... that

determine how a child matures. The responsibilities of clinical child neuropsychologists extend well beyond an early primary role as technicians collecting data on the cognitive consequences of brain injury or disease in neurological populations. It was not until the 1960s that interest in the behavioral sequelae of cerebral dysfunction in children began to thrive (Benton, 2000). Clinical practice, research participation, academic responsibilities, and consultative liaison roles have broadened as the science and
practice of child neuropsychology has 5 ... . Clinical practice
roles include the care, treatment, management, and rehabilitation of children with psychological, psychiatric, neurological, or other medical conditions or diseases. An emphasis on the need to better understand normal brain development has seen a surge in research on normal populations as well. The child neuropsychologist might 6 ... as an independent provider or participate as a multidisciplinary team member, but he or she always brings an unique medical-psychological perspective to the multifactorial assessment of a child’s neurocognitive functioning.

1. Read the article. Complete gaps 1–3 in the text with sentences
a–c.
a. By contrast, multivariate approaches that include implicit measures (kinematics, eye movements, motor potentials, brain activity, etc.) may better access the feeling level of agency.
b. Their sources remain to be specified and their relationship to action specification and action control mechanism is as yet unknown.
c. In this view, sensorimotor processes contributing to the feeling level may run outside of consciousness but may be available to awareness.
47
2. Using your own words explain how you know that you are
“the person who is moving”.
How do I know that I am the person who is moving? The neuroscience of action has identified specific cognitive processes that allow the organism to refer the cause or origin of an action to its agent. This sense of agency has been defined as the sense that I am the one who is causing or generating an action or a certain thought in my stream of consciousness. As such, one can distinguish actions that are self-generated from those generated by others, giving rise to the experience of a self-other distinction in the domain of action. A tentative list of the features distinguishing the concept of agency includes awareness of a goal, of an intention to act, and of initiation of action; awareness of movements; a sense of activity, of mental effort, and of control; and the concept of authorship. However, it remains unclear how these various aspects of action and agency are related, to what extent they are dissociable, and whether some are more basic than others. 1 _______________ . Certain cues must be considered as contributing to the awareness of action or its disruption. These include efferent or central motor signals, reafferent feedback signals from proprioception, vision, action intentions or prior action-relevant thoughts, primary knowledge, and signals from the environment. Of these, the experience of intentionality, of purposiveness, and of mental causation is of particular interest. Intention directly contributes to the sense of agency and in this volume is extensively discussed, e.g., with respect to the control of action and the afferent information coming from peripheral areas of our body.
Moreover, recent conceptual developments have provided new perspectives on the sense of agency, separating an implicit level of feeling of agency from an explicit level of judgment of agency. The first is thought to be characterized by lower-level, pre-reflective, sensorimotor processes, and the second by higher-order, reflective,
48
or belief-like processes. 2 _______________. This is supported by empirical evidence that, for example, minor violations of intended actions or action consequences (i.e., brief temporal delays in sensory feedback) do not necessarily enter awareness, while neural signatures of such violations can be observed. Experimental operationalization of the sense of agency should consider these different levels of agency to systematically explore the multiple indicators of agency and their possible interplay. However, empirical investigations often focus on judgments or attributions of agency, involving subjective reports and plagued by errors through misidentification. 3 ____________.

1. Read the text.
2. Read the statements. Are they true or false?
a. A working knowledge of neuropsychology is relevant to a narrow range of areas of clinical work dealing with some change in cognitive functioning.
b. One of the ways to present information on clinical neuropsychological knowledge and practice is to concentrate on specific neurological disorders.
c. Neuropsychology is not necessary for the law system.
3. Work with your partner to discuss the main points of the article.
Although often viewed as a specialty within Clinical
Psychology, it should be immediately apparent that knowledge
of neuropsychology (and its applications) is relevant to all areas
of clinical work where people (across the age span) might be
showing some change in their cognitive functioning. Thus
a working knowledge of neuropsychology and the assessment
and management of cognitive impairment may be necessary
for the delivery of a competent clinical service by even those
practitioners who do not wish to see themselves as experts

in the field of clinical neuropsychology and who may well have had little or no experience of clinical neuropsychology during their training as clinical psychologists. While we would argue that neuropsychological assessment should form part of the core skills acquired by all trainee clinical psychologists, our compilation of this volume is based on the more realistic appreciation of the training opportunities available to those who are both pre- and post-qualification, an appreciation gained through many years of being actively involved in both pre- and post-qualification training of clinical psychologists at the Institute of Psychiatry. There are of course different ways in which to present information on clinical neuropsychological knowledge and practice. One is to focus on specific neurological disorders, and their assessment and management. Within the scope of a relatively short book, however, we feel that this may limit the apparent relevance and generalisability of the skills that we feel it is important for clinicians to possess. Thus for the current volume we have chosen to focus on broad areas of cognitive function (including those such as praxis and number processing and calculation, which are perhaps less well-developed areas of clinical neuropsychology in the UK), which may be relevant to assess across a wide range of neurological and psychiatric disorders. We have also chosen to include chapters that deal with important background information relevant to those being assessed (such as the effects of medication and the interaction between neurological and psychiatric presentations) and, because so much of clinical neuropsychologists’ work does involve test interpretation, an overview of key psychometric concepts underpinning neuropsychological assessment. In addition to addressing specific cognitive functions, it is of course obvious that clinical neuropsychology may be somewhat differently applied at different ends of the age spectrum, where different factors may assume particular importance. For this reason we
