Types of Cargo Ships
All cargo ships are divided into dry-cargo vessels and tankers although there
are also the so called OBO ships carrying both dry and liquid cargo.
Dry-cargo vessels are divided into universal vessels, designed to carry all types
of cargo, and specialized vessels designed to carry one particular type of cargo (e.g.
refrigerated gods, timber, bulk cargoes etc.) Depending on the cargo handling method
cargo ships may be divided into:
1) LO/LO (lift-on/lift-off) vessels, using cranes or cargo derricks for loading or
discharging;
2) RO/RO (roll-on/roll-off) vessels using rolled vehicles for loading/discharging
and FO/FO (float-on/float-off) vessels using the docking method of loading/discharging;
3) hybrid vessels using a combination of the above methods — LO/RO,
RO/Flow, etc.
In dependence of the power plant installed ships are divided into steamers and
motorships. On steamers the steam engines or steam turbines are installed. Motorships from the larger art of the world tonnage nowadays. On motorships internal
combustion engines are installed.
All cargo ships may be either liners or tramps. A liner is vessel, which sails on
a fixed destination on a fixed route. She has fixed dates of the departure and arrival,
fixed port of all between her home port and place of arrival. A tramp does not sail on
a fixed route.

Engine Room
On a ship, the engine room, or ER, is the propulsion machinery spaces of the
vessel. To increase the safety and damage survivability of a vessel, the machinery
necessary for operations may be segregated into various spaces. The engine room is
one of these spaces, and is generally the largest physical compartment of the machinery space. The engine room houses the vessel's prime mover, usually some variations
of a heat engine — diesel engine, gas or steam turbine. On some ships, the machinery
space may comprise more than one engine room, such as forward and aft, or port or
starboard engine rooms, or may be simply numbered.
On a large percentage of vessels, ships and boats, the engine room is located
near the bottom, and at the rear, or aft, end of the vessel, and usually comprises few
compartments. This design maximizes the cargo carrying capacity of the vessel and
situates the prime mover close to the propeller, minimizing equipment cost and problems posed from long shaft lines. The engine room on some ships may be situated
mid-ship, especially on vessels built from 1900 to the 1960s. With the increased use
of diesel electric propulsion packages, the engine room(s) may be located well forward, low or high on the vessel, depending on the vessel use.
