My working day
I’m very busy on weekdays. My weekdays don’t differ much one from another. My working day usually begins at 7 o’clock. I never wake up myself, my mother always wakes me up. I’m not an early riser, that’s why it’s very difficult for me to get out of bed, especially in winter. Sometimes I do my morning exercises. Then I go to the bathroom, clean my teeth and wash my hands and face. The cold water makes me feel not so sleepy. Then I go back to my room, make the bed, put on my clothes and comb my hair.
By that time my breakfast is ready. My mother usually cooks it for me. When my mother is busy I make my breakfast myself. While having breakfast I listen to the tape-recorder or watch TV. Sometimes I switch on the radio and listen to the latest news on the radio.
At a quarter past eight I take my bag and go to school. I live not far from my school. It usually takes me twenty minutes to walk there. I often meet my friends on the way to school, we go together and chat.
The classes at our school start at 9 sharp. Usually I have six or seven lessons a day. A class lasts for 45 minutes, then we have a ten minutes’ break. During the break I talk to my friends and eat my sandwich. The lessons are usually over at 3 o’clock. After the fourth lesson we have lunch at the canteen.
When school is over I usually go home. Twice a month I make our classroom clean after lessons. I usually sweep and wash the floor and water the flowers.
ABOUT MYSELF AND MY FAMILY __________________________________________________ 13
When I come back home I always take my dog for a walk. Then I have dinner and a little rest. I usually start doing my homework at 4 o’clock in the afternoon. It often takes me two or three hours to do my homework. The teachers give us a lot of homework. Then I usually play computer games or read a book. Sometimes my friends come to my place in the evening and we listen to music, but not very often.
My parents get home at about seven o’clock.

My school life
All children at the age of six or seven go to school in Russia. Secondary education is free, universal and compulsory in our country. The right to education is guaranteed by the Constitution of the Russian Federation.
The school year usually begins on the first of September. Millions of pupils come back to school after the summer holidays. This day is called the Day of Knowledge.
I started school at the age of 7. It was an ordinary secondary school. It wasn’t a specialized school, but our English classes started in the first form. Our school is famous for its high-quality education and strict discipline. I study at school number 154. It isn’t far from the centre of our city.
First I went to primary school. Our classes started at 9 a.m. and lasted to 2 p.m. So we had 5 or 6 lessons a day. We had classes in Russian, Maths, English, Drawing, PT and Music. My favourite subject was English. I liked to learn new words, to read interesting and funny texts and act out dialogues. I was good at English.
Our classes lasted 40 minutes. We went to school five days a week. Saturday and Sunday were days off. The school year was divided into four terms, called quarters. I liked my class and our home-
Susan: Let’s walk, it’s not very far. Kelly: How much time will it take us to get there?
You see, I have to come back in an hour.

there.
Kelly: OK. Let’s go.
teacher. I always felt at home there. Everybody was so friendly and easy to get on with. We often spent our free time together: went to the theatres, museums and on excursions. After three years of primary school classes I went to secondary school.
Now we go to school six days a week. We have only one day off. It is Sunday. Classes begin at 9 o’clock and usually last to 3 o’clock. We usually have 6 or 7 lessons a day. Classes last 45 minutes. After each lesson we have a break. After the third lesson we go to the canteen to have lunch. We study Russian, Literature, Mathematics, Biology, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, English, History, Computer Programming, Music, Physical Education (P.E.), Art and Crafts. My favourite subject is Literature. I like to read fiction. I read a lot. I am good at Literature. I’m not good at Physics. I often fail to learn formulas and terms properly. We usually have a lot of homework. It often takes me several hours to do it. I sometimes have to write a composition for my Literature class, to prepare a report for my Biology class, and to translate a newspaper article from English into Russian for my English class.
But I like studying. My favourite proverb is “Live and learn.”

My school
I am a pupil of the 9th form. I study at school number 241. Our school is situated in Lomonosov street. Over 1,000 pupils from 7 to 16 attend our school. Our school is new. It is only seven years old. It was built to a special design. My school is a four-storeyed building. It is quite big with a sports ground behind it. Our school is beautiful and well-planned. The classrooms are large and light. All the classrooms are well-equipped.
On the ground floor there is a hall, a canteen, a gymnasium, some workshops, a class for Chemistry and a large assembly hall. If you enter the school and turn left you can see a big light canteen. It is always busy and noisy, but it is clean. Here pupils and their teachers have their lunch and dinner. There are white curtains on the windows and beautiful pictures on the walls.
The workshops are well-equipped. There are all kinds of tools and machines there. The boys of our school have a woodwork room, too. There is a room for manual work for girls. Teachers teach them how to cook, sew and design clothes.
Our school gymnasium is very large, light and comfortable. Our physical training lessons are
held there. It has a lot of sport equipment. Our assembly hall is as beautiful as a theatre. Different festivals, concerts, drama performances, competitions are held there.
On the third floor there are classes for primary school. On the first and second floor there are special classrooms for secondary school. They are classes for Physics, Biology, History, Geography, English, Literature, Music, Art and Russian. Besides, we have two computer classes. The classrooms are light and spacious. There are three large windows in each classroom with flower pots on the window sills. Each room has a teacher’s table, some desks, a blackboard, maps and portraits on the walls. The nice curtains make our classrooms cosy.
Our classroom is on the first floor. Its windows face the school-yard. It is a large and comfortable classroom. There are light-blue curtains on the windows, many flower pots on the window sills and beautiful pictures on the walls. Our home-teacher is a teacher of English. We respect her very much. She is a kind and knowledgeable teaсher. She is really fond of her subject. We like to spend our free time in our classroom.

Ann: Hi! Is it you, Betty? You’ve become so pretty!
And you look the very picture of health.
Betty: Hi! It’s after my vacation. You look very well,
too.
Ann: Where did you go? Betty: I travelled again. You know I’m fond of
travelling, don’t you?
Ann: So you travelled! What was it like? Did you
travel by train or by bus?
Betty: We travelled by car. My parents have recently
bought a new car.
Summer holidays
There are four holidays in a school year. They are autumn, winter, spring and summer holidays. It is really a very good thing to have a bit of fun between one’s studies. The English are quite right when they say: “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.” I’m sure all pupils like summer holidays best of all, because they are the longest. During these holidays we can go to the country to walk in the woods, pick berries and mushrooms or go to the seaside to swim and lie in the sun.
I’d like to tell you about my last summer holidays. First we went to the country. My elder sister and I spent two months there, June and July. There is nothing like our village. It is situated not far from the city. It took our family about an hour to get there by car. Our family has got a small country house there. Our grandparents live in the village and sometimes they come to the city. There is a large river there. We often went boating and swimming in the river. The weather was always fine, and we liked to be outdoors. Every day there was something that was fun to do. We went for long walks to the woods, picked
Ann: It’s great! What places did you visit? Betty: We went to Moscow, but on the way there
we visited a lot of old Russian towns.
Ann: You are lucky! Did you take any pictures? Betty: Yes, of course. You know I’m keen on pho-
tography.
Ann: I’d like to see the pictures, Betty. Betty: OK, let’s go to my place. I have some free
time today.
Ann: OK.
flowers, gathered berries and mushrooms. We watered the plants in the garden, took care of the domestic animals and helped our grandmother about the house.
My sister is fond of lying in the sun. The weather was often hot, so she became sunburnt spending much time on the beach.
We had a nice time in the country. Then August came and our family went to the seaside. Several years we dreamt of spending some weeks at the seaside. We decided to go to Sochi. We got there by plane. It was fantastic! Our parents rented a room in a house not far from the sea. It took us about ten minutes to get to the beach. The weather was wonderful! We spent a lot of time at the seaside swimming in the sea, playing volleyball on the beach and lying in the hot sun. The water in the sea was always warm.
I think spending holidays at the seaside is a great rest.
We returned to the city at the end of August, because our parents had to go to work and my sister and I had to go to school. And now I am looking forward to my next summer holidays.

beforehand.

people in caf€es and on the beach there.
Willy: But the sun and the sea are so pleasant.
And where do you want to go this year?
Dan: I’ve got a new river boat. I’m planning to
sail down the Volga. I need a companion. Will you join me?
Willy: I must think it over. Dan: All right.
