Тест 1 Вариант 1
Task 1. Read and translate the text.
The great graphics card shortage of 2020 and 2021
Gaming has never been more popular - when we are all stuck at home.
PC gaming, in particular, is having a renaissance. But it means avid gamers are facing a big problem: graphics cards, the heart of a gaming PC, are incredibly hard to get hold of.
What is the problem?
An office PC might work fine with built-in graphics power, but if you want to do any serious gaming, a dedicated graphics card (GPU) is a must. It can be half the cost or more of a gaming PC.
Better lighting, higher resolution output, and more frames per second - the key to ultra-smooth gameplay - are all usually determined by the GPU.
One of the reasons demand is so high is that the new cards are actually much better than many expected, with performance improvements of anywhere from 5090% over the previous generation.
Is it getting better?
The two main graphics card makers - Nvidia and AMD - cannot make product fast enough.
"Gaming demand is off the charts," said Nvidia's chief financial officer, Colette Kress. "Our overall capacity has not been able to keep up".
It's a similar story for AMD, where company boss Lisa Su said that shortages are the result of demand "rather than manufacturing issues".
What about older cards?
There was some hope that the release of the new cards from AMD - the Radeon 6000 series - would help, two months after Nvidia's release. But they quickly sold out too.
And it is not just a problem for the new products.
One regular upgrader told me mid-range cards now cost twice what they used to and his two-year-old card is selling for almost the same price it did in 2018.
Gareth Bellamy thought it was time to upgrade a five-year-old machine. But new cards "all seem quite pricey," he says. So he looked at the older, less powerful models. "Everything seemed to be out of stock - or if it was in stock it seemed even more expensive than the newer cards that were coming out."
In the end, he gave up - unwilling to pay twice the list price

All about the transistor
Transistors are the devices for amplifying, controlling, and generating electrical
signals. Transistors are the active components of integrated circuits, or “microchips,”
which often contain billions of these minuscule devices etched into their shiny surfaces. Deeply embedded in almost everything electronic, transistors have become the nerve cells of the Information Age.
The first commercial applications for transistors were for hearing aids and
9
“pocket” radios during the 1950s. With their small size and low power consumption,
transistors were desirable substitutes for the vacuum tubes then used to amplify weak electrical signals and produce audible sounds. Transistors also began to replace vacuum tubes in the oscillator circuits used to generate radio signals, especially after specialized structures were developed to handle the higher frequencies and power levels involved. Low-frequency, high-power applications, such as power-supply inverters that convert alternating current into direct current , have also been transistorized. Some power transistors can now handle currents of hundreds of amperes at electric potentials over a thousand volts.
By far the most common application of transistors today is for computer memory chipsincluding solid-state multimedia storage devices for electronic games, cameras, and MP3 playersand microprocessors, where millions of components are embedded in a single integrated circuit. Here the voltage applied to the gate electrode, generally a few volts or less, determines whether current can flow from the transistor’s source to its drain. In this case, the transistor operates as a switch: if current flows, the circuit involved is on, and if not, it is off. These two distinct states, the only possibilities in such a circuit, correspond respectively to the binary 1s and 0s employed in digital computers. Similar applications of transistors occur in the complex switching circuits used throughout modern telecommunications systems. The potential switching speeds of these transistors now are hundreds of gigahertz, or more than 100 billion on-and-off cycles per second.
