49. The Kennedys are supposed to be like a symbol of the USA of the 20th century. Every American newspaper can’t but write about

148

every day life of the family; news about each member and their relatives. The attention of the press was given not only to political activities, but their common life as well.

50. It all started with Patrick Kennedy, an adventurous young farmer, who arrived in Boston in the autumn of 1848. It was the time when lots of immigrants from Europe sailed to The USA. All of them hoped to find a better life there. But for thousands of Irish immigrants pouring into the USA at that time, dreams of happy life didn’t come true. Only the strongest survived and the Kennedys were among them.

51. Patrick, the eldest son, had a wonderful talent for listening, giving advice and lending a hand in time of need. People turned to him when it was necessary. It made him a respected and popular person in East Boston. That’s why he was elected to the House of Representatives at the age of 23 and then to the State Senate.

52.His son Joseph succeeded as a business man and a politician because he was well trained by his father. He had received from his father a motto that he would later pass on to his own children: “Come in first, second place is a failure, and don’t make mistakes. ”In 1938 he was appointed ambassador to Great Britain. He and his wife were excellent parents dedicated to upbringing of their brood. He used to say that “The measure of a man’s success in life is not the money he has made but the kind of the family he has risen”. With pride he saw that his four boys and his five girls always counted among the best. The girls were educated in the best convents. The boys attended nonreligious schools because it was the way to get a broader outlook by having contact with people of various backgrounds. All of them studied at Harvard University and traveled in Europe, South America North Africa. Russia and the Orient.

53.The eldest son Joseph Jr. was one of the most promising of all the Kennedy Children. But in 1941, when the war began, he left Harvard and volunteered for naval aviation and perished in the explosion of his plane during dangerous mission. For John, following his brother at school after school was not so easy experience because of his poor health. At University everything finally changed. A professor, who knew the family perfectly well, said: “It was clear to me that John had a far better historical and political mind than his father and elder brother” He was astonished by his capacity for seeing

149

events in historical perspective. In November 30, 1960, John F. Kennedy was elected President of the USA. But his presidency lasted not long enough to turn his intentions into reality. On November 22, 1963 he was shot in Dallas, Texas. Only one of the brothers remains now; there are also the sisters and a score of young Kennedys.

54. A lot of tragedies befell the America’s famous family. In June, 1958 Robert Kennedy was gunned down in Los Angeles. Only one of the brothers remains now; there are also the sisters and a score of young Kennedys. In 1973 Senator Edward’s son Teddy had a leg amputated because of bone cancer. Edward Kennedy’s career crushed when he was accused of letting a girl drown in a car crashed. Edward Kennedy and John F. Kennedy’s nephew David had been having treatment for drug problem before he was found dead in a hotel room. It is not the last tragedy in the history of America’s “first family”

There are a lot of illusions about the Theatre among people who have never worked in it. 55___ Actually, in a serious production the smallest movement, the shortest speech, is carefully rehearsed. Another illusion is that while acting might be very difficult to the ordinary man, it is very easy for a man born to be an actor. Ability to imitate the voice, a walk, a gesture, is often thought to be enough to make a man an actor. 56 ______. There they learnt how to use their voice, how to speak clearly, how to control their breathing. They were taught good body — movements; how to walk, to sit down and get up, to dance, to fence. 57 ____. Each great capital city has several
