Men, I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue, too. Because to date, I’ve seen my father’s role as a parent being valued less by society, despite my need of his presence as a child, as much as my mother’s. I’ve seen young men suffering from mental illness, unable to ask for help for fear it would make them less of a man. In fact, in the UK, suicide is the biggest killer of men between 20 to

49, eclipsing road accidents, cancer and coronary heart disease. I’ve seen men made fragile and insecure by a distorted sense of what constitutes male success. Men don’t have the benefits of equality, either. We don’t often talk about men being imprisoned by gender stereotypes, but I can see that they are, and that when they are free, things will change for women as a natural consequence. If men don’t have to be aggressive in order to be accepted, women won’t feel compelled to be submissive. If men don’t have to control, women won’t have to be controlled.

Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive. Both men and women should feel free to be strong. It is time that we all perceive gender on a spectrum, instead of two sets of opposing ideals. If we stop defining each other by what we are not, and start defining ourselves by who we are, we can all be freer, and this is what «He For She» is about. It’s about freedom. I want men to take up this mantle so that their daughters, sisters, and mothers can be free from prejudice, but also so that their sons have permission to be vulnerable and human too, reclaim those parts of themselves they abandoned, and in doing so, be a more true and complete version of themselves. You might be thinking, «Who is this Harry Potter girl, and what is she doing speaking at the UN?» And it’s a really good question. I’ve been asking myself the same thing. All I know is that I care about this problem, and I want to make it better. And having seen what I’ve seen, and given the chance,

I feel it is my responsibility to say something. Statesman Edmund Burke said, «All that is needed for the forces of evil to triumph is for good men and women to do nothing». In my nervousness for this speech and in my moments of doubt, I told myself firmly, «If not me, who? If not now, when?» If you have similar doubts when opportunities are presented to you, I hope those words will be helpful. Because the reality is that if we do nothing, it will take seventy-five years, or for me to be nearly 100, before women can expect to be paid the same as men for the same work. 15,5 million girls will be married in the next 16 years as children. And at current rates, it won't be until 2086 before all rural African girls can have a secondary education.

21

If you believe in equality, you might be one of those inadvertent feminists that I spoke of earlier, and for this, I applaud you. We are struggling for a uniting word, but the good news is, we have a uniting movement. It is called «He For She». I invite you to step forward, to be seen and to ask yourself, «If not me, who? If not now, when?»

Thank you very, very much.

Philippa Thomas: «Hello, I’m Philippa Thomas. Our top story on impact today "She left the UK to join the so-called Islamic state". But now, nine months pregnant the former London schoolgirl wants to come home.

As questions are raised over whether she can and should return, Shamima Begum says she has no regrets about her time inside the caliphate. Award

– winning journalist Maria Reza tells BBC World News the Philippine authorities are still trying to intimidate her after her release from custody. And Japan is a country notorious for its rigid work culture, but is that changing that`s all coming up for you, yeah on Impact.

A teenage girl, who left London four years ago to join the so-called Islamic State, could potentially be prosecuted for terrorist offences if she comes back to Britain. Shamima Begum is now 19 says she has no regrets about joining the militant group, but wants to come back to the UK, because she’s nine months pregnant and wants, in her words, to live quietly with her child. John Donnison reports».

John Donnison: «"Bring me home" – years after running away to join the Islamic state group and become a teenaged jihadi bride Shamima Begum wants to come back to Britain. She’s one of hundreds of women and children to flee is his last tiny bolt hole in bar goes in Eastern Syria. And this sprawling refugee camp in the north of the country is now home to the former East London schoolgirl, 19 years old, nine months pregnant having already lost two children to sickness and malnutrition».

Shamima Begum: «I have to think about my baby as well. After my two kids died, I’m really overprotective of this baby. I’m scared that this baby is going to get sick in this camp. That’s why I really want to get back to Britain. Because I know it will be taken care of».

22

John Donnison: «After several weeks in the camp and due to give birth any day, he was discovered by Anthony Lloyd, a journalist with The Times newspaper».

John Donnison: «She was just 15 when she made the journey from Bethnal Green in East London to the battlefields of Syria, seen here on CCTV on route in Turkey with two teenaged school friends who made the same journey. She married a fighter. She says she has no regrets, and says at least initially life in Syria met all her aspirations».

Shamima Begum: «It was like a normal life. The life that they show on the propaganda videos, you know, it’s a normal life. Every now and then there are bombs and stuff but other than that…».

Anthony Lloyd: «Did you ever see any executions?» Shamima Begum: «No, but I saw beheaded heads in the bins». Lloyd: «In the bins?»

Begum: «Yeah».

Lloyd: «What was that like when you first saw that? These are the heads of captives?»

Begum: «Yeah – it didn’t faze me at all».

Donnison: «At her former school questions have been done to intervene to stop the teenager going. The Government now says it won’t provide diplomatic help to get Shamima Begum out of Syria. And if she makes it back on her own, she could face charges».

Ben Wallace MP: «Ultimately what we have to do is protect the public. And people that went out there often as amateurs are now professional supporters of terrorism and we have to make sure we mitigate that threat should they come back».

Donnison: «Others though believe Shamima Begum should be treated as a victim».

Dal Babu: «We took my 15 years old children who were groomed. They were on the Internet though radicalized. The families had no idea whatsoever about what was going on. I appreciate she’s now 19, but these were individuals who were groomed».

Donnison: «With the fall of IS in Syria imminent more supporters like Shamima Begum will likely flee. Some will seek to return to the UK. Their legal status is not clear. John Donnison, BBC News».

23

Philippa Thomas: «This is a story that obviously raises a lot of questions about how to deal with those who joined the self-styled Islamic State. We’ll hear from a radicalization expert later in the program.

A Philippine journalist and government critic accused of libel has told BBC World News that the accusations against her are ludicrous and amount to political harassment. Maria Reza has been released on bail. These pictures are from her arrest on Wednesday when she was led out of the company’s headquarters because of an article written seven years ago – she told the BBC the government is trying to silence her and her news website Rapala, which has frequently criticized president Rodrigo Duterte».

Maria Reza: «This is the sixth time I’ve filed bail in the last two months. This shows an abuse power and the weaponization of the law and now I’m going to the Philippine government to demand my rights – this is political harassment. It is meant to intimidate both me and Rattler into silence, but beyond that it goes to the heart of what of the role of press freedom in a society. I mean in the press freedom is not just for the journalists which is why this is not just about me and about Rattler press. Freedom is the pillar of a democracy of all Philippinos rights to the truth so that they can hold the powerful to account the crazy thing is just doing our jobs. I asked the Philippine government to go back and look at the spirit of the Constitution to make sure that they don’t cross the line where they broke the spirit of the law which frankly to have these cases and then to be arrested and detained last night. You know bail is a right. It’s a right. I should not have been arrested without bail – without the possibility of bail».

My fellow Americans, tonight I am speaking to you because there is a growing humanitarian and security crisis at our southern border. Every day, Customs and Border Patrol agents encounter thousands of illegal immigrants trying to enter our country. We are out of space to hold them, and we have no way to promptly return them back home to their country.

24

America proudly welcomes millions of lawful immigrants who enrich our society and contribute to our nation. But all Americans are hurt by uncontrolled, illegal migration. It strains public resources and drives down jobs and wages. Among those hardest hit are African Americans and Hispanic Americans.

Our southern border is a pipeline for vast quantities of illegal drugs, including meth, heroin, cocaine, and fentanyl. Every week, 300 of our citizens are killed by heroin alone, 90 percent of which floods across from our southern border. More Americans will die from drugs this year than were killed in the entire Vietnam War.

In the last two years, ICE officers made 266,000 arrests of aliens with criminal records, including those charged or convicted of 100,000 assaults, 30,000 sex crimes, and 4,000 violent killings. Over the years, thousands of Americans have been brutally killed by those who illegally entered our country, and thousands more lives will be lost if we don’t act right now. This is a humanitarian crisis – a crisis of the heart and a crisis of the soul.

Last month, 20,000 migrant children were illegally brought into the United States – a dramatic increase. These children are used as human pawns by vicious coyotes and ruthless gangs. One in three women are sexually assaulted on the dangerous trek up through Mexico. Women and children are the biggest victims, by far, of our broken system. This is the tragic reality of illegal immigration on our southern border. This is the cycle of human suffering that I am determined to end.

My administration has presented Congress with a detailed proposal to secure the border and stop the criminal gangs, drug smugglers, and human traffickers. It’s a tremendous problem. Our proposal was developed by law enforcement professionals and border agents at the Department of Homeland Security. These are the resources they have requested to properly perform their mission and keep America safe. In fact, safer than ever before.

The proposal from Homeland Security includes cutting-edge technology for detecting drugs, weapons, illegal contraband, and many other things. We have requested more agents, immigration judges, and bed space to process the sharp rise in unlawful migration fueled by our very strong economy. Our plan also contains an urgent request for humanitarian assistance and medical support. Furthermore, we have asked Congress to close border security loopholes so that illegal immigrant children can be safely and humanely returned back home.

25

Finally, as part of an overall approach to border security, law enforcement professionals have requested $5,7 billion for a physical barrier. At the request of Democrats, it will be a steel barrier rather than a concrete wall. This barrier is absolutely critical to border security. It’s also what our professionals at the border want and need. This is just common sense.

The border wall would very quickly pay for itself. The cost of illegal drugs exceeds $500 billion a year – vastly more than the $5,7 billion we have requested from Congress. The wall will also be paid for, indirectly, by the great new trade deal we have made with Mexico.

Senator Chuck Schumer – who you will be hearing from later tonight – has repeatedly supported a physical barrier in the past, along with many other Democrats. They changed their mind only after I was elected President.

Democrats in Congress have refused to acknowledge the crisis. And they have refused to provide our brave border agents with the tools they desperately need to protect our families and our nation.

The federal government remains shut down for one reason and one reason only, because Democrats will not fund border security.

My administration is doing everything in our power to help those impacted by the situation. But the only solution is for Democrats to pass a spending bill that defends our borders and re-opens the government.

This situation could be solved in a 45-minute meeting. I have invited Congressional leadership to the White House tomorrow to get this done. Hopefully, we can rise above partisan politics in order to support national security.

Some have suggested a barrier is immoral. Then why do wealthy politicians build walls, fences, and gates around their homes? They don’t build walls because they hate the people on the outside, but because they love the people on the inside. The only thing that is immoral is the politicians to do nothing and continue to allow more innocent people to be so horribly victimized.

America’s heart broke the day after Christmas when a young police officer in California was savagely murdered in cold blood by an illegal alien, who just came across the border. The life of an American hero was stolen by someone who had no right to be in our country.

Day after day, precious lives are cut short by those who have violated our borders. In California, an Air Force veteran was raped, murdered, and

26

beaten to death with a hammer by an illegal alien with a long criminal history. In Georgia, an illegal alien was recently charged with murder for killing, beheading, and dismembering his neighbor. In Maryland, MS-13 gang members who arrived in the United States as unaccompanied minors were arrested and charged last year after viciously stabbing and beating a 16-year-old girl.

Over the last several years, I’ve met with dozens of families whose loved ones were stolen by illegal immigration. I’ve held the hands of the weeping mothers and embraced the grief-stricken fathers. So sad. So terrible. I will never forget the pain in their eyes, the tremble in their voices, and the sadness gripping their souls.

How much more American blood must we shed before Congress does its job?

To those who refuse to compromise in the name of border security, I would ask: «Imagine if it was your child, your husband, or your wife whose life was so cruelly shattered and totally broken?»

To every member of Congress: pass a bill that ends this crisis.

To every citizen: call Congress and tell them to finally, after all of these decades, secure our border.

This is a choice between right and wrong, justice and injustice. This is about whether we fulfill our sacred duty to the American citizens we serve.

When I took the Oath of Office, I swore to protect our country. And that is what I will always do, so help me God.

Thank you and goodnight».
