Unit 2.  Parts of a letter. Beginning and ending a letter

Dear …

1.an opening — this part says why you are writing

2.the main message — this part gives the details

3.the close — this part usually talks about the future

Yours …

Parts of a letter. Speaking about the main parts of a letter, most letters have three basic parts, such as an opening, the main message, and the close. Look at the example.

As you see, each part is typically a separate paragraph. However, themainmessagecanbemorethanoneparagraph.Everythingdepends on the message. You may write about more than one subject.

Beginning and ending a letter

Beginning. Now let’s have a closer look at the way we should begin a letter. There are some basic sets of openings such as initiating

13

a letter and replying to a letter. If you want to initiate relations with a partner, you should start you letter in the following way:

We are writing to enquire about… We are writing in connection with …

We are interested in … and we would like to know…

But if you answer a letter, you should start as follows:

Thank you for your letter of 4April

asking if …

We have received your letter of 4April

enquiring about …

enclosing …

concerning …

Example: Thank you for your letter of 8 April 2018. I am writing in connection with my letter of 8 April.

Thank you for your letter of 8 April, asking if we have received your order.

Ending

As far as you know how to begin a letter, let’s consider some ways of ending a letter.

I look forward to receiving your reply (order, products). Looking forward to hearing from you.

If you have provided some information in the letter, you should close your letter as follows:

I hope that this information will help you.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further information.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.

Example: If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I look forward to seeing you there.
