Louis Pasteur – "a father of microbiology"

Louis Pasteur, a French biologist, microbiologist and chemist renowned for his discoveries of the principles of vaccination, microbial fermentation and pasteurization was born in 1822 in Dole, France.

As a young man, Pasteur studied at the Ecôle Normale in Paris. In 1843, he became a research chemist. He developed such a reputation, that in 1854, aged just 32, he became Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Lille. At this time, Lille was the centre of alcohol manufacture in France. Pasteur continued his work on microorganisms by studying such liquids as milk, wine and vinegar.

In 1857, he was appointed Director of Scientific Studies at the Ecôle Normale in Paris. Between 1857 and 1859, Pasteur became convinced that the liquids he had studied were being contaminated with microbes.

In April 1864, Pasteur explained his beliefs about microbes in front of a gathering of famous scientists at the University of Paris.

73

Up to 1865, Pasteur’s work involved only beer, wine and milk. In 1865, he was asked to investigate the disease that affected the silk worm industry. In 1865, a cholera epidemic hit Marseilles. Pasteur carried out a number of experiments in a hospital in the hope of finding the germ that caused this feared disease. In the summer of 1880, he found a vaccine against cholera by chance. In 1868, Pasteur suffered from a brain haemorrhage that affected the left side of his body. This affected his ability to work but that he had done his scientific work up to 1868. He was the director of the Pasteur Institute, established in 1887 till his death on September 28, 1895.

Louis Pasteur is famous for his medical discoveries that provided direct support for the germ theory of disease. He is regarded as one of the three main founders of bacteriology, together with Ferdinand Cohn and Robert Koch, and is popularly known as the "father of microbiology". Nevertheless, he is best known to the general public for his invention of the technique of treating milk and wine to stop bacterial contamination, a process now called pasteurization.

Sports nutrition

If you are a bodybuilder, a professional athlete or simply exercising to improve your health, sports nutrition plays a key role in optimizing the beneficial effects of physical activity. Making better decisions with your nutrition and hydration can result in improved performance, recovery and injury prevention. Consuming the right balance of food and drink is important for everyone. But athletes, for example, may need more calories than the average person. Thus, if you are an athlete, or simply someone who’s made the decision to start exercising on a regular basis, think carefully of a good nutrition plan. Fats, protein and carbohydrates all provide your body with energy.

Carbohydrates are the primary fuel used by working muscles. Adequate intake is essential for preventing muscles fatigue. Carbohydrates as simple sugars are naturally found in milk products, fruit and vegetables. Nutritionists recommend usage of unrefined grains, which are still packed full of vitamins, minerals, and fibre.

Fat is an essential component of any diet as it helps the body absorb nutrients as well as being a great source of energy. Although fats are important, we should still attempt to monitor how much we are eating. Fats provide fatty acids that can be used as a source of energy – especially if your exercise takes more than one hour. Fats also provide the building blocks for hormones and formation of cell walls. Unsaturated fats are found in foods such as avocados, olives, nuts, and oily fish. They give health to heart.

Proteins can be used as a source of energy and is critical for building new muscle tissue. Protein is present in every cell of the body and helps build and repair tissues to form the building blocks of bones, muscles, skin, and blood.

Staying well hydrated during exercises and training is extremely important. Drinking water is a good way of keeping yourself hydrated during exercise periods. Some sportsmen use energy drinks, particularly those who undertake long distance running.

75

To create the best nutrition strategy, a sports nutrition professional will be required to asses not just an individual’s training and diet but also their lifestyle, day-to-day habits.

TEXT-INSTRUCTION: WHAT MAKES A GOOD

INTERVIEW?

A job interview is your opportunity to present your talents to a prospective employer. During the interview, the employer judges your qualifications, appearance, and general fitness for the job. The interview helps you decide if the job meets your career needs and interests and whether the employer is the kind you want to work for.

To present your qualifications in the best way, you have to prepare for the interview: you should know how to act to make the interview an opportunity to “sell” your talents and skills.

Here are the ideas of Careers officer from one of the employment agencies.

What makes a good interview? First of all, good preparation before the interview. Read the simple three rules which will help you.

76

Rule1. Find out as much as possible about the company where are you going for the interview. You can get a lot of useful information from the company’s brochures, annual reports, and catalogues.

Rule 2. Find out if the interview is with one person or with a group of people. Find out what their jobs are. It’s very useful to know something about the interviewers before you meet them.

Rule 3. Make a list of questions you want to ask at the interview. Remember that an interview is a two-way process. The company finds out as much as possible about you, and you find as much as possible about the company.

That’s what you need to do before the interview. And now the interview itself. There are seven more guidelines.

Rule 4. Dress smartly. A suit or something formal is best.

Rule 5. Arrive in good time. Arriving late for the interview is the worst thing you can do.

Rule 6. Create a good first impression. First impression is most lasting. Start the interview with a smile, and a friendly manner.

Rule 7. Try to stay positive and relaxed during the interview. As a rule, people don’t feel relaxed, but your body language gives the interviewer a lot of information about you. You want that information to be positive.

Rule 8. Don't give only “yes” or “no” answers. Talk freely about yourself, give reasons for your opinions, and explain why you’re interested in the job.

Rule 9. Ask questions. Use the list of questions you prepared before the interview. Show your interest

Rule 10. Make use of the interview learning about atmosphere, manner of behavior of employer, the necessary reactions to the questions. After the interview, analyze your participation in this important event in your future career.

Nutrition for kids

Nutrition for kids is based on the same principles as nutrition for adults. Everyone needs the same types of nutrients — such as vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, protein and fat. Children, however, need different amounts of specific nutrients at different ages.

So what's the best formula to fuel your child's growth and development? Consider these nutrient-dense foods:

Protein. Choose seafood, lean meat and poultry, eggs, beans, peas, soy products, and unsalted nuts and seeds.

Fruits. Encourage your child to eat a variety of fresh, canned, frozen or dried fruits – rather than fruit juice. If your child drinks juice, make sure it's 100 percent juice without added sugars. Look for canned fruit that says it's light or packed in its own juice, meaning it's low in added sugar.

Vegetables. Serve a variety of fresh, canned, frozen or dried vegetables. Aim to provide a variety of vegetables, including dark green,
