Розщеплений підмет — це підмет, що складається з іменника та його правостороннього означення, відокремленого від іменника присудком. Таке означення може бути виражене прийменниково-іменниковим словосполученням, інфінітивом, дієприкметниковим зворотом та підрядним означувальним реченням. У перекладі присудок українського речення звичайно ставиться перед іменником і таким чином утворюється цілісна група підмета:
The possibilities thus appear to exist for constructing efficient computer-based analyses.
Таким чином, здається можливим опрацювання ефективних аналітичних процедур за допомогою комп'ютера.

Головне при перекладі розщепленого підмету -- це точна його ідентифікація і, зокрема, відокремлення його від обставинних словосполучень, які йдуть за присудком. Таке синтаксичне явище не притаманне українській мові, і тому послівний переклад речень із розщепленим підметом призводить до порушення синтаксично-стилістичних норм української мови.

В українській мові такі речення вживаються значно менше, тому при перекладі застосовуються певні трансформації синтаксичної структури речення. Підмет англійського речення часто трансформується в обставину, а присудок може відтворюватися в українському реченні безособовим зворотним дієсловом:
The book earned him his M.I.T. Ph.D. in 1959. Завдяки цій книзі він отримав ступінь доктора у Масачусетському технологічному інституті в 1959 році.

A conference held at the University of New Hampshire in October 1994 produced this book. 9. Table I summarizes the results. 10. Such a solution must, as far as I can
see, take account of the following facts. 11. Chapter 3 reviews the basic theoretical and methodological assumptions and practices of the research. 12. The last few decades have witnessed a surge of interest in research on methodological issues. 13. This paper will selectively survey some recent proposals concerning methodological approaches. 14. Results strongly suggest that these observations do not match commonly held perceptions. 15. In addition, some of the papers develop and demonstrate new concepts and ideas based on his thought. 16. У деяких реченнях англійського наукового стилю, передусім у метатекстових і парентетичних, підмет може бути відсутній, але його досить легко можна вивести з контексту (як правило, це займенник it). Звичайно такі речення перекладаються безособовими реченнями без підмета:
As has already been illustrated, Banfield has no way of accounting for the interpretation. Як уже було показано, Бенфілд не може жодним чином пояснити цю інтерпретацію.
As has been shown earlier, this is one of the most important characteristics. Як було показано вище, це — одна з найважливіших характеристик.

Речення з пасивною формою дієслів think, expect, show, see, find, argue, know, mean, consider, regard, report, believe, hold, suppose, note, presume, claim, admit, interpret та ін.
перекладаються складнопідрядним реченням з додатковим підрядним, де головне речення складається з неозначено-особової форми дієслова-відповідника (у відповідному часі) особової форми англійського дієслова-присудка, а підрядне речення
— із підмета, що відповідає підмету англійського речення, та особової форми дієсловаприсудка, яка відповідає інфінітиву англійського речення:
The data have been admitted to be incorrect. Визнано, що ці дані неправильні.
Such diffusion is presumed to have occurred in many cases. Вважають, що така дифузія відбувалась у багатьох випадках.
Як можна бачити з прикладів, при перекладі слід звертати особливу увагу на форму англійського інфінітива — простий (неперфектний) інфінітив звичайно перекладається формою теперішнього часу, а перфектний інфінітив -- формою минулого часу дієслова-присудка підрядного речення:
Still they can hardly be said to have formulated a true scientific theory. І все ж навряд чи можна стверджувати, що вони сформулювали дійсно наукову теорію.
The term "model" is held to have important normative significance. Вважається, що термін
"модель" має важливе нормативне значення.
Необхідно також враховувати часову форму англійського дієслова-присудка і відповідно перекладати інфінітив:
This was noted to be confined almost entirely to peripheral portions. Було помічено, що це майже цілком (було) обмежено периферійними ділянками.
The two processes are seen to be triggered off by each other. Видно, що ці два процеси започатковуються один одним.
2. Коли суб'єктний предикативний інфінітивний зворот вжито у підрядному реченні, його переклад дещо відмінний від вказаного вище способу. У таких випадках особова форма англійського дієслова-присудка звичайно трансформується в парентетичне речення або фразу, а інфінітив — в особову форму українського дієслова-присудка:

Приблизне уявлення про те, що, відбувається, на думку дослідників, у даному випадку, дає наступна формула.
A teleological explanation is one in which some development is logically argued to require the prior emergence of some other development. Телеологічне пояснення -- це таке пояснення, де певна подія передбачає, як логічно стверджується, існування якоїсь іншої попередньої події.
Подібним чином перекладається й друга з двох однорідних суб'єктних предикативних інфінітивних конструкцій, тоді як перша конструкція перекладається звичайним способом:
The result is believed to be novel, and is found to be in agreement with the experiment.
Вважають, що цей результат новий і, як з’ясувалося, відповідає дослідним даним.
3. Речення, де вжито суб'єктний предикативний інфінітивний зворот з активною формою дієслова-присудка (happen, appear, see, prove, turn out, be likely, be certain, be sure тощо), перекладаються способом, відмінним від наведених вище:
Neither proposal is likely to work. Малоймовірно, щоб якась із цих пропозицій виявилася слушною.
The investigation is likely to produce good results. Це дослідження, цілком імовірно, дасть добрі результати.
The attempt is not likely to yield an entirely satisfactory result. Ця спроба навряд чи дасть цілком задовільний результат.
This discovery is certain to lead to important insights. Це відкриття, безумовно, призведе до отримання важливих результатів.
This hypothesis turns out to be the single most persuasive one. Ця гіпотеза, виявляється, є
єдиною найбільш переконливою з усіх.
So, there appear to be two choices. Отже існує, виявляється, два вибори.
This observation seems to be confirmed by the possibility of 2a. Це спостереження,

1) особова форма англійського дієслова-присудка трансформується в парентетичне слово (вираз), а інфінітив — в особову форму українського дієслова-присудка;
2) особова форма англійського дієслова-присудка перетворюється у головне речення ("малоймовірно", "мені здається" тощо), а інфінітив трансформується в особову форму дієслова-присудка у підрядному додатковому реченні.
Особливої уваги потребує вибір адекватної часової форми дієслів-присудків у перекладі: якщо в англійському реченні вжито присудки be (un)likely, be (un)certain, be sure та подібні, в перекладі вживається, залежно від способу перекладу, або форма майбутнього часу, або форма умовного способу; якщо в англійському реченні вжито інший присудок (seem, appear, turn out, prove та подібні) у формі теперішнього часу, у перекладі також вживається форма теперішнього часу.
Слід також мати на увазі, що у цьому звороті перфектний інфінітив перекладається формою минулого часу дієслова-присудка:
This area really seems to have come to the fore in recent years. Ця галузь досліджень,
здається, дійсно вийшла останніми роками на перший план.
The course for further research appeared to have been firmly set. Напрямок подальших досліджень, здавалося, вже був чітко визначений.
No English-language publication of this book seems to have appeared or to be planned.
Здається, не вийшло та й не планується жодного видання цієї книги англійською мовою.
Якщо дієслово-присудок англійського речення має додаток, що вводиться прийменником by, то такі сполучення присудка і додатка перекладаються за допомогою парентетичних фраз "на думку", "за даними", "як показав (виявив, встановив, описав)" тощо:
The material was found by A. Ginzburg (1990) to show high activity. Як встановив О.Гінзбург, цей матеріал виявляє велику активність.
The results were interpreted by Brown (1989) to be insufficient to draw any substantial conclusions. На думку Брауна (1989), цих результатів недостатньо для того, аби зробити якісь вагомі висновки.
The evidence was considered by G. Framm to imply the existence of some barriers. На думку Дж. Фрамма, ці дані вказують на існування певних бар'єрів.
4. Необхідно відзначити особливості вживання та перекладу інфінітива дієслова be, коли він сполучається із прикметником, дієприкметниками I або II, виконуючи допоміжну функцію. В англійських реченнях він може бути відсутнім у складі звороту, тому й у перекладі в певних випадках він не обов'язковий:
This field of research appears (to be) more promising. Ця галузь досліджень видається більш перспективною.
The signal output is shown (to be) directly coupled to the transformer input. Показано, що вихід сигналу безпосередньо з'єднано з входом трансформатора.
Завдання Визначте суб'єктно-предикативний інфінітивний зворот та перекладіть наступні речення:
1. The examples are not as clear or obvious as they are claimed to be. 2. The answer appears to be positive. 3. Two major reasons seem to have been involved. 4. There appears to be no improvement in the process. 5. Great care appears to have been taken in the preparation of the experiment. 6. An analogous pattern of changes seems to exist in other spheres as well. 7. Many contemporary theoreticians seem to have been caught here in an insoluble dilemma. 8, These cases do not seem to have been discussed from exactly this perspective in the literature. 9. His system appears to have three aspects. 10.Consider two examples which appear to be quite typical. 11.The two sets of forms appear to be mutually exclusive as functionally analogous. 12.
