Interrogation. Place: the police station

Card 1 David Lawson, the first policeman

You and your colleague have caught two men, who you believe to be guilty of robbing the house of rich Mr. Welsh. The housemaid of Mr. Welsh claims that she had seen two men near the house half an hour before the crime was committed. Find out the alibi of the two men, if necessary conduct a lineup. What you need is frank admission of guilt.

Card 2 Jack Weapsman, the second policeman

Card 3 Mr. Welsh, a middle-aged rich man

Your house was robbed. You found out that the painting by Manet, ten thousand dollars and a big golden ring with a ruby were stolen, when you came home at 11 p.m. Your housemaid, Mrs. Hoover claims that she had seen two men near the house half an hour before the crime was committed. You want your painting and the family ring back and you wish to help the police to find the robber.

Card 4 Mrs. Hoover, the housemaid in Mr. Welsh’s big house

Your master’s house was robbed in the evening. You did your job that day and left the house at 10 p.m. Before you left you had seen two suspicious-looking men nearby. You want to help the police to find the robber.

Card 5 Tom Shark, the first suspect

You and your friend were walking near the house of Mr. Welsh at 9.45 p.m. Later you were caught selling a painting by Manet in an antique shop. You are suspected of robbing the house of Mr. Welsh. Think of an alibi.

Card 6 Greg Fidget, the second suspect

You and your friend were walking near the house of Mr. Welsh at 9.45 p.m. Later you were caught selling an expensive golden ring with a ruby in a jewellery shop. You are suspected of robbing the house of Mr. Welsh. Think of an alibi.

Exercise 2. Agree with the following statements and expand on them or object to them and correct.

Exercise 3. Describe the following pictures using active vocabulary and grammar.

a.Compare old letter writing and nowadays one. Which do you prefer and why? Dwell on the advantages and disadvantages of both.

c.Look at the picture of a post office. Relying upon the images given in it, suggest the procedure of preparing letters for sending.

Exercise 4. Read the following jokes, find the similar ones and tell them to your group-mates.

a.A young man finally got a job at the Post Office. He was full of energy and eager to work. The supervisor agreed to work with the new employee, even though he had been warned that he was still immature and knew nothing of the job.

The first job the supervisor gives the young man is in sorting, and much to everyone's surprise, the new employee separated the letters so fast that his motions were literally a blur. The supervisor was very pleased and asked the young man to come into his office at the end of the day. He said, "I just want you to know that we are all very proud of you. You're one of the fastest workers we have ever had."

The humble young man said, "Thank you, sir. And tomorrow, I'll try to do even better."

"Better?" the supervisor asked with astonishment. "How can you possibly do better?"

The young man smiled proudly and said, "Tomorrow, I am going to read the addresses."

b.A man worked in a post office. His job was to process all mail that had illegible addresses. One day a letter came to his desk, addressed in a shaky handwriting to God. He thought, “I better open this one and see what it’s all about.”

So he opened it and it read: “Dear God, I am an 83 year old widow living on a very small pension. Yesterday someone stole my purse. It had a hundred dollars in it which was all the money I had until my next pension check.” “Next Sunday is Easter, and I had invited two of my friends over for dinner. Without that money, I have nothing to buy food with.” “I have no family to turn to, and you are my only hope. Can you please help me?”

The postal worker was touched, and went around showing the letter to all the others. Each of them dug into his wallet and came up with a few dollars. By the time he made the rounds, he had collected 96 dollars, which they put into an envelope and sent over to her. The rest of the day, all the workers felt a warm glow thinking of the nice thing they had done.

Easter came and went and a few days later came another letter from the old lady to God. All the workers gathered around while the letter was opened.

It read, “Dear God, How can I ever thank you enough for what you did for me?” “Because of your generosity, I was able to fix a lovely dinner for my friends.

We had a very nice day, and I told my friends of your wonderful gift. “By the

way, there was 4 dollars missing. It was no doubt those thieving guys at the post office.”

c.A guy goes to the Post Office to interview for a job.

The interviewer asks him, “Are you a veteran?”

The guy says, “Why yes, in fact, I served two tours in Vietnam.”

“Good,” says the interviewer, “That counts in your favor. Do you have any service-related disabilities?”

The guy says, “In fact I am 100% disabled. During a battle, an explosion removed my private parts so they declared me disabled, it doesn’t affect my ability to work, though.”

“Sorry to hear about the damage, but I have some good news for you, I can hire you right now! Our working hours are 8 to 4. Come on in about 10, and we’ll get you started.”

The guy says, “If working hours are from 8 to 4, why do you want me to come at 10?”

“Well, here at the post office, we don’t do anything but sit around for the first two hours. Don’t need you here for that!”

Exercise 5. Make a dialogue basing on the following situations.

a.Two young fellows speak about post offices.

b.Two Englishmen speak about people who used to get a lot of letters.

c.A young man who can’t give you a very good description of the place you want.

d.Two students at the book shop cannot make their choice.

e.A man who is eager to buy at least one post card and a post office worker.

Exercise 6. Read the sayings and proverbs. Make sure you understand them, find Ukrainian/Russian equivalents. Think of situations to illustrate them.
