Exercise 3. Describe the following pictures using the active vocabulary.

a.This is a fireplace scheme. Describe the principle of its work relying upon the picture.

b.What do you know about the Cinemascope? Can you guess when the first wide screens appeared? Dwell on their advantages and disadvantages.

c.Look at the pictures and think of the role of fish and chips in the lives of Englishmen. What do you think is the reason for such popularity of this dish?

Exercise 4. Read the following jokes, find the similar ones and tell them to your group-mates.

a.Passenger: “Does this bus go to London?” Conductor: “No.”

Conductor: “There's an advertisement for baked beans on the side, but we don't sell them!”

Exercise 5. Make a dialogue basing on the following situations.

a.Two passengers in a bus speak about their experience in going by bus.

b.Two young people express their opinion about TV and cinema.

c.A capricious young lady talks to a builder about the installation of a fireplace in her house.

d.Two middle-aged people discuss the moral lapse of modern society due to the influence of TV advertisements on youngsters.

e.Two students speak about their pen friends they have had for a long time.

Exercise 6. Read the sayings and proverbs. Make sure you understand them, find Ukrainian/Russian equivalents. Think of situations to illustrate them.

Exercise 8. Role play. Looking for a house.

Card 1 Linda Richards, young wife

You and your husband got married two months ago and now you are looking for a house. You have already seen many houses but none was worth buying. You want a little two-storeyed house with a lawn, not far from the river crossing. Your house should have four bedrooms, three bathrooms and your main condition is a fireplace.

Card 2 Denis Richards, young husband

You and your wife got married two months ago and now you are looking for a house. You have already seen many houses but none was worth buying. You want a little two-storeyed house with a lawn and a swimming-pool, not far from the river because you have a boat. You don’t care about the number of bedrooms but your main condition is that it should be far from the house of Linda’s parents.

Card 3 Mrs. Lewis, the mother of Linda

Your daughter and Denis got married two months ago and now they are looking for a house. You are trying to help them. You want your daughter to live in a big house with a swimming-pool and great number of bedrooms and bathrooms but your main condition is that it should be close to your house.

Card 4 Anna Kerch, an estate agent

You want to help your clients find the house they need. You listen to their requirements but none of the houses you offer them has everything they need. Make them take a decision and choose a house. Be excited while describing the way the furniture is arranged and other minor details of the houses you offer them.

Exercise 1. Discuss the following questions, using the active vocabulary and the Past Indefinite Tense (Active and Passive Voice), the Past Continuous Tense, the Past Perfect Tense, the Past Perfect Continuous Tense.

15.Can you tell whether a person speaks with feeling or not? What are the signs?

16.Can any person pull the trigger and shoot? Do you think it is easy to kill a man?

a.Compare the two types of crime: robbery and burglary. What is the difference between the two?

b.Describe the situation, paying attention to the commentary in the picture, comment on it. What other reasons for burglary can you think of?

c.Look at the picture. Speculate on whether burglary/robbery is always illegal.

b.Two policemen speaking about a “high-profile” case of robbery.

e.Two law students discuss the crime rate in our country, comparing to the crime rate of other countries.
