Посібник призначений для студентів 1 курсу англійського відділення факультету іноземних мов. Мета посібника полягає в розвитку та удосконаленні комунікативних навичок, якими повинні володіти незалежні користувачі мови на рівні В2, відповідно рівням володіння мовою «Загальноєвропейських Рекомендацій з мовної освіти, вивчення, викладання, оцінювання». У посібнику представлені вправи комунікативного спрямування, які мають допомогти студентам розвинути комунікативну компетенцію та узагальнити і закріпити матеріал за темами граматики («Структура речення», «Час та стан», «Непряма мова», «Узгодження часів», «Іменник. Прикметник. Числівник») та за темами аналітичного читання (курс С. В. Шевцової для студентів 1 курсу). Вправи передбачають поглиблену роботу студентів як на заняттях, так і під час самостійного опрацювання означеного матеріалу.

Exercise 1. Discuss the following questions, using the active vocabulary and the Present Indefinite Tense (Active and Passive Voice).

1.What do you know about the English and their culture?

2.Do you usually travel a lot? Are you fond of travelling?

3.Do you always watch weather forecasts? Why?

4.What topics for conversation are considered to be safe in your native country?

5.Do you usually wake up early? What do we call people who wake up early/late?

6.Do you have a watch? Why do you need it? Is it usually fast or slow? Why?

7.Do you have a true friend? What does a true friend mean to a person?

8.Do you always tell the truth? Why? Do you believe there are cases when it is better to tell lies? What are they?

9.What people can you call dull? Do you communicate with such people? Why?

10.Do you often move to a new house/flat? Do you like moving in and out? Why?

11.Are you often turned to for advice/help? Why? By who?

12.Do you do anything for a change from time to time? Think of an example.

Exercise 2. Agree with the following statements and expand on them or object to them and correct.

1.The bus is the fastest kind of city transport.

2.When the stars are seen the whole night the next day is sure to be nice.

3.People have to work hard if they want their dreams to come true.

4.One true friend is better than a hundred of fair-weather (ненадёжный друг) ones.

5.It is possible to travel around the whole world in eighty days.

6.It is not safe to drive either very fast or slow these days.

7.If you are not sure if the door is closed, better get back and check.

8.People change their names without good reasons.

10.You have to study hard to pass examinations well.

Exercise 3. Describe the following pictures using active vocabulary and grammar.

a.Compare e-books and paper books. Which do you prefer and why? Dwell on the advantages and disadvantages of both.

b.Describe the publishing house of the past and compare it with modern publishing houses.

c.Look at the picture of a weather office. Relying upon the information given in it, suggest the procedure of preparing a weather forecast.

Exercise 4. Read the following jokes, find the similar ones and tell them to your group-mates.

a. “Why did your sister cut a hole in her new umbrella?” “Because she wants to be able to tell when it stops raining.”

A city boy is on his first camping trip. He is eating his lunch under a tree when an old-timer comes along.

“It smells like rain,” he says to the boy.

The city boy replies, “They said it was lemonade.”

b.A mathematician, a physicist, and an engineer are traveling through Scotland when they see a black sheep through the window of the train

“Aha,” says the engineer, “I see that Scottish sheep are black.”

“Hmm,” says the physicist, “You mean that some Scottish sheep are black.” “No,” says the mathematician, “All we know is that there is at least one sheep in Scotland, and that at least one side of that one sheep is black.”

c.Ole and Lars are on their very first train ride. They brought along bananas for lunch. Just as they begin to peel them, the train enters a long, dark tunnel. “Have you eaten your banana yet?” Ole asks excitedly.

“No,” replies Lars.

“Well don't touch it then,” Ole exclaims. “I just took one bite and went blind!”

Exercise 5. Make a dialogue in the present indefinite tense basing on the following situations.

a.Two fellow passengers speak about their habits while travelling by train.

b.Two Englishmen speak about weather.

c.A young author of a dull book of travels and a publisher who doesn’t want to publish the book.

d.Two students discuss modern broadcasting.

e.A lady who wants to travel around the world and her daughter who thinks it is not safe.

Exercise 6. Read the sayings and proverbs. Make sure you understand them, find Ukrainian/Russian equivalents. Think of situations to illustrate them.

a.“After rain comes fair weather.”

b.“Clear moon, frost soon.”

c.“Books and friends should be few but good.”

d.“A cheerful friend is like a sunny day spreading brightness all around.”

Card 1 Mrs. Bookson, the Chief Editor of the publishing house “The Globe”

Your publishing house publishes mainly scientific literature. You are approached by John Dreams, the editor of your publishing house with the request to speak to his friend Michael Travelsome, the author of a book of travels “The Globe”, who is a very talented writer and experienced traveller.

Though you have no intention to publish the book, you do not want to insult the author and to offend your editor.

Card 2 Michael Travelsome, the author of a book of travels

You have written a book after travelling all around the world.

You want your book to be published in the publishing house “The Globe”.

Your friend, who works in this publishing house, advises you to speak to Mrs. Bookson, the Chief Editor, and promises to help you with the conversation.

Card 3 John Dreams, the editor of publishing house “The Globe”, a friend of Michael Travelsome, the author of a book of travels

You work in the publishing house “The Globe” and you are on good terms with Mrs. Bookson, the Chief Editor of the publishing house.

You want to help your friend Michael Travelsome to publish his book of travels in the publishing house “The Globe”

You know that he is a very talented writer and experienced traveller.

You come to Mrs. Bookson, the Chief Editor, and she agrees to meet your friend, but doesn’t promise you to publish his book.

5.Have you ever made payments? Who is responsible for household running costs in your family?

6.Are you good at taking decisions? Have you ever made a decision you were sorry about?
