Read the following sample answers to the question “Tell me about yourself”
Hi! I’m Vera Streltsova. I come from Moscow, Russia. I live in a two-room apartment with my husband and two children. My husband’s name is Andrew and he runs a construction company. Our childeren’s names are Liza and Grisha. They are 5 and 3 years old. I graduated from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. I studied at the department of Radio Engineering and Cybernetics. I have been working in the sphere for 6 years and now I want to write a PhD thesis and get a degree, since I gained certain practical experience. My research advisor hasn’t yet specified the exact subject of my thesis but it will deal with semantic web. It will concern the differences between current web and semantic web and also between their structures.
Hi! My name is Ivan. My surname is Petrov. I’m from St. Petesburg, Russia. I live in MEPhi hostel with my research fellow. I’m single but I’ve got a date. Her name is Victoria and she works as a sales manager at an American company. I’ve recently graduated from National Research Nuclear University MEPhI. I studied at the department of Physics of Strength. I decided to enter a postgraduate course because my research advisor got interested in the subject of my Diploma paper. The subject of my Ph.D. thesis is ‘Structure and magnetic properties of nanocrystalline mechanically alloyed Fe–10% Ni and Fe–20% Ni’ It deals with a mechanical alloying technique that has been used to prepare nanocrystalline Fe–10 and Fe–20 wt.% Ni alloys from powder mixtures.
Good preparation implies thorough planning. Sketch your own answer to the question: “Tell me about yourself”. Use the model answers.
Make a short presentation about yourself.

National Research Nuclear University MEPhI
National Research Nuclear University/ NRNU “MEPhI” or MEPhI is one of the most prominent technical universities in Russia. It was founded in 1942 as
Moscow Mechanical Institute of Munitions, but soon
it was renamed and became Moscow Mechanical Institute. Its original mission was to train skilled personnel for the Soviet military and atomic programs as well as to establish nuclear education in Russia. In 1953, it got the name of Moscow Engineering Physics Institute, which did not change until April 8, 2009.
National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (NRNU MEPhI) was established by the Order of Russian Government on April 8, 2009 in accordance with the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation. The aim of its establishment is to provide human resources as well as scientific innovations for the nuclear industry and other hightechnology branches of the economy and social sphere of the Russian Federation.

At present, our academic staff conserves and develops the traditions of nuclear education established by famous scientists of the 20th century. University employs more than 20 academicians, about 500 professors, and 1200 associate professors. University professors and alumni have made major contributions to various fields of theoretical and experimental physics, mathematics, cybernetics, and computer sciences.
Today NRNU “MEPhI” has twelve faculties: Automatics and Electronics;
Informational Security;
High Technology Economy and Management; Cybernetics;
Experimental and Theoretical Physics; Physics Technical Faculty;
Evening Faculty; Higher Physical College;
Physical Higher School named after N.G. Basov MEPHI-PHIAS; International Faculty
Preparatory Faculty; Further Training Faculty.

Department
MEPhI has 81 departments. Read an introductory session to 1st year postgraduates about one of it.
Prof. Kudryavtsev, Head of Postgraduate Department, is giving an introductory session for new postgraduate students in the Department of Automation at NRNU MEPhI.
Prof. Kudryavtsev: Let me tell you about the staff. The Head of Department is Professor Dunaev. He will be giving some postgraduate seminars as well as giving some of the first-semester lectures. Then there are two Senior Lecturers. They will be handling lectures and tutorials. Each of you will also meet our academic secretary, Ms Gorski. If you need to talk to any of us, our office hours are on the noticeboard or on our website. Any questions?
Student: When can we meet our dissertation supervisors?
Prof. Kudryavtsev: You’ll be given a dissertation supervisor as soon as you choose your dissertation topic. He or she’ll supervise you during the period of your study and you need to follow his or her advice and recommendations.
Student: What are the main directions of research in your department?
Prof. Kudryavtsev: Educational scientific profile of our department includes:
Automatic control systems for technological processes at nuclear power plants and nuclear facilities
Training systems and simulating complexes for nuclear power plants and other power-industry enterprises
Monitoring, diagnostics, control, and protection systems for nuclear reactor installations
Industry automation systems, etc.
