George's Method

George Smith was very proud of his method. He always said "If you want peace in the home, never answer back when your wife is angry". And George's family life was very happy, indeed.

One day George has lent twenty pounds to his friend, Alec Smart. George's wife heard of it. When they were going to bed she started to complain. After each complaint she made a pause but George kept silent all the time. That was his method.

  • George, I heard you lent 20 pounds to that good-for-nothing, Alec Smart.

  • Unless I'm very much mistaken, you'll never see that money again.

  • If you were a perfect husband you would have bought me a new dress with that sum. I saw a lovely one for 18 pounds at Selfridges the other day. Quite cheap at the price.

  • The man from the fire-insurance company came this morning. I wouldn't have sent him away if I'd had the mecessary money. The house might burn tomorrow and we wouldn't get one penny from the company.

  • Do you hear the mice downstairs? I would have bought a mouse-trap for two shillings if you hadn't given away twenty pounds.

  • I wouldn't have said one word if you had lost the money on horses or football pools.

  • If you had any feelings as a father of your children you would have bought John a bicycle. But you preferred to play big-hearted Father Christmas to Alec Smart.

  • In case you want to know, a man came with a ticket for the Cup Final. He wanted two pounds or else he wouldn't leave the ticket here. I'd have paid him but I had no money in the house.

At that moment George couldn't keep quiet any longer. No tickets for the Cup Final. That was too much. He forgot his method and shouted in wild despair, "If I had a gun I'd shoot myself!!!" Mrs.Smith smiled, "That would be a pity, old boy," she said, "because I got the tickets for the Cup Final. I borrowed the money from Alec Smart's wife."
