Foreign Trade

What is now called international trade has existed for thousands of years long before there were nations with specific boundaries. Foreign trade means the exchange of goods and services between producers and consumers or between producers in different parts of the world. Economic units such as agricultural, industrial, and service enterprises participate in trade.

Each country can specialise in producing the goods in which it has an advantage. For example, France and Italy are known for their wines, and Switzerland maintains a reputation for fine watches. An advantage can be earned by product quality and customer acceptance. For example, German manufacturers sell cars in the United States as well as Japanese automakers compete for customers in Europe and Latin America.

Company Performance

Companies need to know how they are performing in order to make plans for the future and to analyse and find solutions to the problems that they may be facing. To do this successfully, businesses require information not only about their own activities but also about the markets they operate in.

Management accounts for the company provide key data about operational efficiency, whereas financial accounts give information about financial performance. This allows companies

to know not only how much they are selling or how much profit they are receiving but also what their costs are or how much they have to pay for the different things that they need to operate their businesses. With this information companies can then calculate how much money they have made or how much money they have lost during a specific period.

Annual accounts for listed companies, whose shares are sold on the Stock Exchange, have to be presented to the public in the form of an annual report which gives detailed financial and other information about companies.
