Speech exercises

Ex.1. Comment on the following quotations:

  1. Leisure is the basis of culture.

  2. Leisure is neither idleness nor busyness; it is both productive and refreshing. (Josef Pieper. Pantheon, 1952; Random House, 1963).

  3. Enjoyment is always bound up with gratitude; if this gratitude is deeply felt it includes the wish to return goodness received and is thus the basis of generosity. (Melanie Klein. Envy and gratitude and other works, 1946).

Ex. 2. Memorize the following proverbs and sayings. Make up mini-dialogues using them.

A constant guest is never welcome

Ex. 3. Make up dialogues on the following situations.

  1. You complain your lady-friend of your husband’s passion for gambling and ask her friendly advice on what to do in this terrible situation.

  2. You want to choose a perfect nightclub for a party with your friends. Discuss the following issues with your best friend: club type, music, attire, club programme.

  3. Your relatives and you think of how to put more enjoyment into your family’s spare time. Let everybody give their ideas of what they find satisfying and fun.

  4. Two children share the impressions on their trip to the amusement park.

Ex. 4. Points to ponder and discuss.

1. The concept of summer as a “kick-back and rest” season has coincided with the growth of the leisure industry. 2. With electronic communications networking the globe, it becomes harder and harder to find truly peaceful periods of time. 3. Nature watching is the best pastime. 4. It’s not always easy to decide how to spend your free time. The choice often depends on different factors.

Ex. 5. Tell your group mates about your favourite pastime. Start your story with one of the following phrases:
