Sample Conversations
Dave and Sarah decide to visit an American restaurant.
Waiter: Good afternoon. Table for two? Dave: Yes, please. Waiter: Smoking or non-smoking? Sarah: Non-smoking. Waiter: Right this way.
They walk to a table. Dave and Sarah sit down and the waiter gives them menus.
Waiter: I’ll be back in a few minutes to take your order.
After 7 minutes, the waiter returns.
Waiter: Are you ready to order? Dave: I think so, but can I ask? What is Beef Stroganoff? Waiter: It’s beef cut into small pieces and served in a sour cream and white wine sauce. Dave: Ok, that sounds good. I’ll have that. Waiter: Excellent. And that comes with your choice of French fries, fried mushrooms, or rice. Dave: I’ll have rice. Waiter: Anything to start?
Dave: I’ll have the French Onion soup. Waiter. OK. And what can I get you? Sarah: Is the Spaghetti and Meatballs very large? Waiter: Yes, it’s a big portion. Sarah: Oh, I’m not very hungry.
Waiter: Then can I recommend the Chicken with Mushrooms? That comes with noodles, but it’s not too big. Sarah: Ok. I’ll take Chicken and Mushrooms. And a salad to start. Waiter: Very good. And what can I get you to drink? Dave: A Coke, please. Sarah: I’ll have orange juice. Waiter: Oh, I’m afraid we’re out of orange juice. But we have pear, apple, grape, and kiwi-banana. Sarah: Kiwi-Banana? That sounds interesting. I’ll try that. Waiter: Excellent. I’ll be back with your drinks in a minute.

At the Restaurant
Waiter: Good evening, sir. A table for one?
Mike: Yes, that’s right.
Waiter: Smoking or non-smoking table?
Mike: Non-smoking, please.
Waiter: Would you like to follow me? (Come this way, please.)
Mike: Have you got the menu in English?
Waiter: Here you are, sir.
Waiter: Have you decided on something, sir?
Mike: What do you recommend?
Waiter: The steak is very good.
Mike: Ok, I’ll have a prawn cocktail to begin with and the steak.
Waiter: How would you like your steak, sir? Rare, medium, or well-done?
Mike: Well-done.
Waiter: How about the sweet?
Mike: I’d like some fruit if you have any.
Water: What would you like to drink?
Mike: Could you tell me what “kvass” is?
Waiter: It’s a famous Russian drink.
Mike: I see. Well, I’ll take a glass of kvass and a bottle of red wine, semi-dry, please.
Waiter: So, that’s the well-done steak, a prawn cocktail, some fruit, a glass of kvass and a bottle of semi-dry wine, is that right?
Mike: Yes, that’s right.
Mike: Excuse me, please, this steak is rare. I asked for well-done.
Waiter: I’m awfully sorry. I’ll bring you another one.
Mike: And I’m afraid I didn’t order mineral water. I asked for a glass of kvass.
Waiter: I’m sorry, sir. I’ll change it for you at once.
Mike: Could I have the bill, please?
Waiter: Certainly, sir. Just a moment. Here you are.
Mike: Excuse me, but the bill is wrong. We didn’t order two bottles of wine. We only had one.
Waiter: Yes, you are right, sir. I’m sorry, sir. I’ll change the total.
Mike: Do you accept credit cards? Visa?
Waiter: Definitely, sir. Thank you very much. Good-bye, sir.
Mike: Good-bye.
