III. Focus on Writing
1. Translate the following extracts: “Dixon now had …. going” (pp. 199-200); “Well, we both have … them ….” (p. 202); “Passing under … loudly” (p. 206-207); “He watched her … course.” (p. 215). Explain their key ideas.
2. Write the summaries of the chapters. Comment on their language such as key-words, key-phrases, recurrent words. Analyze the manner of characterization, comment on the general slant of the chapters, their stylistic tone.
3. Write a brief comment (100 words) on the relationship between Dixon and Prof. Welch. Dwell on the necessity to keep balance between objective factors and personal affection in the problems of career and business relationships.
IV. Focus on Text Analysis
Irony is based on the simultaneous realization of two logical meanings – dictionary and contextual, that are opposite to each other. E.g. “It must be delightful to find oneself in a foreign country without a penny in one’s pocket”. In the particular context the word delightful acquires the meaning “unpleasant”.
Find the examples of irony in the chapters under discussion. Analyze the effect irony produces/ is supposed to produce on the reader. Specify its role in the understanding of the text, in the development of the characters and in the general impact of the chapters.
