On each blank line write the letter of the correct phrase to complete the sentence.

Write the abstract noun for each verb listed below. (An abstract noun is a word that refers to an idea rather than a concrete thing). Use a dictionary for help if necessary. Some common endings for abstract nouns are –ment, -ance, -tion, and -soin. Sometimes the noun and verb are spelled exactly the same.

In the reading you have examples of people having opposing ideas about a political issue. Here are some more examples of these phrases and patterns:

I'm in favor of strong gun-control laws. I'm opposed to allowing private citizens to own handguns.

I'm for more gun-control laws. I'm against private ownership of handguns. I support stricter gun control. I oppose the easy purchase of handguns.

Try using some of these patterns. Then share your sentences with the classmates.

Debate these issues in small groups. Then choose one and write about it.

1. Should voting be mandatory for all American citizens?

2. If there is a draft, should military service be mandatory for women as well as men?

3. Should people who refuse to serve in the military be sent to prison?

B. On a personal note

Write about one of these topics.

1. Summarize what a person has to do to become an American citizen. Do you think the requirements are reasonable?

2. Do you think the American government provides enough services and benefits to the nation's residents? If not, what additional help is needed? Should taxes be higher so that the government can provide more assistance to individuals and families?

3. Write about something you are opposed to. Explain why you oppose it.
