4. Taking words apart

A. Names of languages

In English, most names of languages end with -ese, -an, -ish, or -ch. In most cases, the same word is used to refer to the people or products of that country. Next to each country, write the name of the language or languages spoken there. Use a dictionary if necessary.

In a dictionary, find the meaning of these word parts and write them on blank lines.

Example: refuge in the word refugee: protection

5. Practising sentence patterns

In English, many different words and expressions can be used to contrast ideas. Some of them are but, however, nevertheless, in spite of, and on the contrary. Find examples of these words in the text. Discuss the ideas that are being contrasted in the sentences. Then write your own sentences with contrasting words.

Debate these issues in small groups. Then choose one and write about it.

1. Should immigrants live in neighborhoods with people from their native country? Or is it better to "mainstream" and mingle more with Americans and immigrants from other countries?

2. Should states provide free services - such as education and health care - to illegal aliens and their children?

3. Should states that have a small immigrant population contribute money to states with large numbers of immigrants to help provide funds for their needs?

Write about one of these topics.

1. People used to talk about immigrants "assimilating" (becoming similar to the people in their new country). Now, Americans talk about cultural diversity and about accepting and appreciating the customs of immigrants. In what areas of life do you think immigrants should assimilate? In what areas should they retain the customs and lifestyle of their native country? Consider moral outlook, attire, food, marriage customs, childrearing practices, language, and so on.

2. If you ever decide to move to another country, which country would you choose and why?

3. Are you an immigrant, student, or visitor in the U.S.? If so, write about why you came. Did you find what you wanted?
