THE HISTORY OF WIMBLEDON

  1. How did the Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon develop?

The Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon have developed from an amateur event in 1877 witnessed by a few hundred of spectators to a highly professional tournament attracting over 500.000 people. Just 22 men entered the Gentlemen’s Singles in 1877. The Ladies’ Singles competition began in 1884 with 13 entrants.

By 1900 Wimbledon had become an international tournament. The first overseas winner was May Sutton from the USA who was the Ladies’ Champion in 1905. She won again in 1907, the same year that Australian Norman Brookes became the first foreign Gentlemen’s Champion.

Ever since only two British players Arthur Gore and Fred Perry have managed to win the Gentlemen’s event.

In 1967 the Lawn Tennis Association voted to open The Championships and in 1968 professionals played against amateurs for the first time. Rod Laver and Billie Jean King were the first champions of this new era.

In 1980 Bjorn Borg from Sweden became the first player to win the Gentlemen’s Singles five times in succession 1. His classic battles with American rivals John McEnroe and Jimmy Cannors are now established in Wimbledon history.

  1. Who hosts and runs The Championships?

The host of the leading annual sporting event in the world is The All England Lawn Tennis Club. It is a private club founded in 1868 originally as The All England Croquet Club and its first ground was situated in Wimbledon.

The Championships start each year six weeks before the first Monday in August and last for a fortnight or for as long as necessary to complete all events. Players from over 60 nations regularly compete.

The event is run by a Committee consisting of 12 members of AELTC Committee and 7 nominees from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).
