Grammar Target: Passive Voice

Sequence of Tenses

Step 1. Read the dialogues:

  1. -Is football popular in your country?

-Yes, it is played in every small town.

  1. - How old is this Sports Palace?

- It was built in 1972.

  1. - Are you going to the stadium next Sunday?

- Sure, a very important football match will be played.

It promises to be interesting.

  1. -What is this man with a camera doing?

- The match is being filmed by TV.

  1. - Did you speak to the coach yesterday?

- I am sorry, I didn't. When I came to the stadium the match was being played

and the coach was very nervous.

  1. -Where is cricket as popular as in England?

-As far as I know cricket has been seriously played only in Australia, India and Pakistan.

7. - Did you see how Liverpool scored goal yesterday?

- I'm sorry, didn’t. It had been already scored before I came to the stadium.

8. - Will you go to the football match tonight?

- I’m afraid the game will have been finished by the time I come.

PASSIVE VOICE

The Passive Voice indicates that the action is directed

towards the subject who doesn’t act but is acted upon

to be + Participle II

Ex.1. Define the voice of the verbs in italics:

  1. The element demonstrated by O.Korbut specialists called “Korbut’s sommersault”

This institute is officially called the Belarusian State University of Physical Culture.

  1. The British played rugby football in the 19th century.

Rugby football is played with an oval ball.

  1. This athlete demonstrated top-class performance at international competitions many times.

Some new elements were demonstrated by Belarusian gymnasts at the World Gymnastics Championships.

  1. May I take your ball? – No, it was taken by someone yesterday.

6. The coach allowed the players to have a rest.

A rugby player is allowed to hold his opponent by the shoulders.

Ex. 2. Complete the phrases in column A with suitable information in column B.
