BELARUS - EXCELLENT HOST FOR THE FIRST HYUNDAI WORLD CUP

It was in September 1994 when the first Judo World Cup by team of nations for men was held in Paris, France. 13 teams from all five continents took part in that event. France won the first World Cup beating Germany in the final.
In 1997 the first women’s World Cup by team of nations took place in Osaka, Japan
with 10 teams from all five continents participating. The Cuban women defeated Korea
in the final to take the gold medal. France and Japan placed the third.
In Minsk the International Judo Federation (IJF) combined the two events to host the
1st Hyundai World Cup by team of nations for men and women in September 1998.
Belarusians ran a close to perfect championship 1. The sports palace and the hotel were
very close to each other so transport was not a problem. The support of home fans almost
resulted in a bronze medal for the Belarusian men’s team but finally it was the Russian team that
took the third place after a very exciting and nervous match. France gained the other bronze.
Of the 13 men’s teams Japan proved to be the strongest with a 5:1 victory over Brazil
in the final. The Cuban women again reached the final and hoped to retain the title
The previous year runner- up the Korean team was defeated in the first round 4:1. In the final the
gold medal was presented once more to Cuba.
