EXTRA-CLASS COMPETITIONS FOR CHILDREN

Sport provides lots of opportunities for children. It helps children discover their abilities, gain recognition for their skills. Children's sport is the most important way by which young athletes often get to top professional sport and develop their leadership skills.

There are various ways teams and individuals can compete. Tournaments are the most popular of competitions. There are the following possible types of tournaments: an Olympic meet, single or double elimination tournaments, a round-robin tournament, a ladder tournament ¹.

The Olympic meet tournament is used for contests in swimming, gymnastics and track-and-field athletics. The winners of such event are awarded points. An individual or team champion is determined on the basis of points.

Single elimination tournament. It is the easiest to organise and the quickest to determine a winner. It is held when the number of teams is large, the facilities are limited and the number of days to compete is minimum. In the single elimination tournament the number of games is always one less than the number of teams.

Double elimination tournament. In a single elimination tournament when a team loses a game it is eliminated from all further competition. It is quite possible that the second best team in a league can be defeated in the first round. Since the aim of extra-class competitions

is to provide maximum activity of children, a second (consolation)² round can be added to any single elimination tournament. The added round assures each team at least two games.

Round-robin tournament. In a round-robin tournament each team plays every other team in a league. If time and facilities permit this is the most desirable type of competitions for team and individual sports ³. The winner is the player or team that wins the most games.

A ladder tournament ³ is a continuous competition limited only by the space and time available ⁴. Each player is placed by chance or by the results of prior competitions on a ladder. The object is to climb to the top of the ladder and remain their until the end of the tournament.

Pyramid tournament ⁵ is a variation of the ladder tournament. The main difference is that there are always several players on the first rung ⁶ and not one player as in the ladder tournament. There are also more opportunities to play a greater number of players or teams.
