II. Second Conditional sentences.

NB The second conditional is used to express imaginary situations which are contrary to facts in the present and, therefore, are unlikely to happen in the present or future. We normally use past simple or past continuous in the if-clause and would (could, might) + infinitive in the main clause.

e.g. If they wanted to make an offer, she would listen and think it over.

If a celebrity were staying in the hotel, security arrangements would be tightened.

We use the second conditional to express a variety of functions:

- Giving advice (with were): If I were you, I would take her out of that school.

- Polite requests: If you could deal with this matter, I’d be very grateful.

- Desires/ regrets: If we didn’t have to work so hard, we could spend more time together.
