He expected his friend to return.

Суб’єктний інфінітивний комплекс

He is said to write a new novel.

I was supposed to meet him.

We are sure to learn about it.

Кажуть, що він пише новий роман.

Передбачалось, що я зустріну його.

Ми, напевно, дізнаємось про це.

Exercise 1. Practice reading:

My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun;

Coral is far more red than her lips’ red;

If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;

If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.

I have seen roses damask’d, red and white,

But no such roses see I in her cheeks;

And in some perfumes is there more delight

Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.

I love to hear her speak, - yet well I know

That music hath a far more pleasing sound;

I grant I never saw a goddess go, -

My mistress when she walks treads on the ground.

And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare

As any she belied with false compare.

Exercise 2. Read and translate the sentences paying attention to the functions of the Infinitive: state the function of it.

1. Everyone had a wish to say something. 2. He decided to go alone. 3. We must work hard to live. 4. The question must be answered. 5. She was going to my room to see my aunt. 6. She had no desire to open her heart to me. 7. To make a good breakfast is the great thing. 8. I am ready to go with you. 9. Nothing could be done before morning. 10. To cross the bridge at night was not safe. 11. To earn a living he became a salesman. 12. The man with a beard was the first to speak. 13. This is my son and you have no right to take him away from me.

Exercise 3. Read and translate the sentences with the Objective Infinitive complex:

1. We watched the boys play football. 2. Mother saw him climb the tree. 3. Nobody notice her go away. 4. We expect him to come back at 7. 5. I expect you to come in time. 6. I think him to have got good education. 7. I suppose this man to be about forty. 8. I believe your children to be at home now. 9. I know her to be a very pretty girl and clever at that. 10. I wish you to tell me about it. 11. I find the film to be dull. 12. I’d like them to speak English in class. 13. She makes us learn the poems by heart. 14. I won’t let you do it again.

Exercise 4. Read, translate the sentences with the Subjective Infinitive complex:

1. The delegation is reported to have arrived in Kyiv. 2. He is said to be writing a play. 3. We are supposed to make a present for her. 4. This book is known to be translated into many languages. 5. She is believed to be a lover of art. 6. Out students are expected to become good designers. 7. They were often seen to cross the street at that place. 8. She was noticed to burst out laughing at seeing him. 9. She seems to understand spoken English very well. 10. We happened to meet them at the exhibition now and then. 11. He appeared to have recognized me. 12. They are likely to help us solve this problem. 13. He is unlikely to get an excellent mark at the exam. His knowledge of the language seems to be so poor. 14. What am I supposed to do with it?

Exercise 5. Translate the sentences paying attention to the functions of the Infinitive:

1. There are so many beautiful pictures to be seen in the Hermitage. 2. His habit was to paint a series of pictures of the same object at different time of the day and in different seasons of the year. 3. He went to Italy, France, Holland to copy old masters. 4. But to copy old masters was not enough for him. He was fascinated by the impressionists. 5. He saw that his pictures were far from being perfect but he did not want to discourage the young artist and promised to call on him in his studio. 6. He wanted her to sit for him. But she did not even imagine that she was supposed to be a nude model. 7. She needed money desperately but she felt nothing and nobody would make her sit nude. 8. The third, and the largest painting, was the last work done by the artist, and it is considered to be his best. 9. Turner was the first to show to his country men the beauty of the sea. 10. He doesn’t appear to have sold a single picture in his lifetime, to any of the important American art-collectors of his day. 11. He, William Harnett, did manage, however to become a celebrity, among the Broadway journalists who often visited the bars where his paintings were exhibited. 12. One of these happened to represent a dollar-bill which looked as if it could be lifted out of the picture and taken away in one’s pocket. 13. Many great artists of the past did not seem to find fame and recognition during their lifetime.

Exercise 6. Translate into English using Infinitive complexes:

1. Я чула, як вона співала цю пісню. 2. Мати помітила, як він встав і вийшов з кімнати, Але вона нічого не сказалa. 3. Я хочу, щоб ви вивчили цей вірш напам’ять. 4. Мені не подобається, коли вона говорить так швидко. 5. Я не змушую вас погоджуватись зі мною. 6. Кажуть, що він зараз живе в Києві. 7.Повідомляють, що польська делегація прибула до Києва. 8. Вважають, що він дуже освічена людина. 9. Кожного ранку її бачили в крамниці. 10. Відомо що вона вивчала кілька іноземних мов. 11. Вона, здається, знає про це. 12. Він виявився здібним портретистом. 13. Навряд, щоб вона дістала цю книжку. 14. Очевидно, ви забули про нашу зустріч.
