GREEN
Green: said of many things which have green in them. People speak of an evergreen oak because it is green all the time. And certain cabbages are called green cabbages because their leaves do not whiten like those of white cabbages. (Antoine Furetière (1619-1688) From his Dictionnaire universel (Universal Dictionary) the publication of which caused his expulsion from the Académie Française)
One day vegetation appeared and for millennia helped blue-green algae improve the quality of oxygen in the planet’s primitive atmosphere. This vegetation contained a green pigment – chlorophyll – that, stimulated by solar radiation, allowed plants to absorb carbon gas and emit oxygen. This chemical process is known as photosynthesis.
The delicate gaseous equilibrium that allows us to breathe on earth today all depends, therefore, on a green pigment. Ironically, although the plant world soon colonized the planet’s submerged surfaces, no plant could provide a dye to make a green as beautiful as any nature offered in profusion.
Life and Renewal: Green is life. Abundant in nature, green signifies growth, renewal, health, and environment. On the flip side, green is jealousy or envy (green-eyed monster) and inexperience.
Nature of Green: Green is a restful color with some of the same calming attributes of blue. Like blue, time moves faster in a green room.
Culture of Green: Green is the national color of Ireland and is strongly associated with that country. Green also has close associations with Islam. Because of all the green in nature the color is reminiscent of Spring. Coupled with red it's a Christmas color.
