The whole idea of using Powerpoint and graphics to boost your presentation skills is that people learn best when they hear and see at the same time. This is the best way to convey the “greatest number of ideas in the shortest amount of time”.

Slides should be well-designed (i.e. made specifically for presentation purposes) and should remain on display for a significant length of time while you explain something. |
"Flashing" slides is bad style. In general 8-10 slides (including the title/intro and conclusions) is plenty for a 15-minute talk. |
Light fonts on dark backgrounds are good for textual material. Scientific graphs often work better on a light background. |
Pale shade of fonts and graphs make them illegible. Avoid light colours like yellow as these sometimes do not appear in the conference room lighting conditions.
|
Keep the backgrounds simple - one colour or a gradual fade. |
Multi-coloured or ornamented backgrounds draw attention from information itself. |
Leave graphical figures up for a long time while talking, textual material up for a short time only. Keep text to a minimum. |
Don’t press much textual material into one slide as too much information is liminal. Many photos or pictures in a slide clutter the audience with details. |
You should label the x and y axes in graphs. |
Try not to add grid lines to graphs as they clutter the image. |
Graphs are more powerful than tables because they represent the change in information and powerful trends. Use relational graphs (i.e. plotting one variable against another) as they contain more information and allow to avoid confusion. |
Avoid the use of vast tables, sometimes a fragment of a table illustrates your statements or results more effectively. |
9. Read a cut version of the presentation and put the fragments into logical, commonly-accepted order. Decide which part a) includes Motivation and Reasons for this research; b) deals with the Results; c) includes Problems the researchers faced with.
