Targets

Targets Overview

MaxSea shall process all tracked targets reported across its interface and shall present all reported targets in accordance with the system equipment connected to MaxSea.

Target's layers are specific vector files

Depending on the system unit connected to MaxSea you can access to miscellaneous target's layer which stack there transparency on displayed chart and on which user add marks and save his data.

Targets Layer zone in the Chart toolbar allows you to quickly Show/Hide each of them.

Depending on the system unit connected to MaxSea, you can access under the Target Layer Zone in the chart toolbar to :

1.ARPA targets

2.AIS (AIS & AIS station) targets

3.Buoys (Ryokuseisha, SERPE MLR, LineMaster, Tayio,...) targets

4.Fleet tracking takes in account all other type of mobiles (TrackPointII, INSTANT STDC...) targets

In this section you will learn on:

1.Display Targets on charts , Each Mobile Targets are clearly shown in real time on the Chart with heading vectors.

2.Targets Catalog : all available Mobile targets are grouped in a Catalog. It allows a direct access to a Mobile center according to the type of mobile and its Mobile properties.

3.Targets Center is your control center to follow up all available information transmitted from each target . It includes Speed, headings, radius of gyration, size and characteristics of the mobile...

4.Targets Options... give you useful information about a Mobile target.

Target's symbol

Target symbols which are displayed on chart depend on equipment system unit connected to MaxSea.

1.ARPA : its target symbol is represented by a green circle

2.AIS: its target symbol is represented by a green triangle

3.BUOYS or other type of target: their symbol are represented by a green square. and different symbolic status will show you that targets are:

1.selected or not

2.considered as dangerous or not

3.lost

Showing or hiding a Target's layer

You can use the "Show / hide" function to improve target's display visibility and to avoid of having too many Mobile targets on screen. Two ways to show or hide a specific Mobile's layer:

1 - From the Chart toolbar:

A drop-down menu appears

Choose a Mobile layer that you wish to show or hide on the chart. In our example as shown in Fig.1 the ARPA and AIS Target layers are chosen.

2 - From the Catalog under the Targets menu

All different targets are listed in a catalog and it allows to quickly choose Mobile layer you wish to display on the current chart. Refer to the related topic to learn more about Targets catalog.

Choose [Catalog] from the [Targets] menu to bring up the Catalog window.

Click in each boxes of each Mobile layers to show (box checked) or hide ( box unchecked) them.

Centering on a Target

The Mobile Centering on is a useful function to quickly retrieve a target displayed on the chart.

The "Center on" function is accessible in each Mobile Center. Refer to the related topic to learn more about

Targets Center.

Two ways to bring up directly the Mobile Center and set up the display for each corresponding Mobile layer.

1 - From the menu toolbar

Choose [Centers] from the [Targets] menu and click the Mobile center you want to bring up its Center.

The Mobile center listed all targets which belong to the same system.

Click the corresponding line to select a target.

Click the "Center on" button in the Mobile center's window.

The chart is automatically centered on the selected target.

2 - From the Catalog

Choose [Catalog] from the [Targets] menu to bring up its window.

The Mobile catalog listed all the Target's layers which available in MaxSea.

Right-Click on a Target's layer and choose "Layer Center".

The Mobile Center's window appears on screen.

Click the "Center on" button in the Target center's window.

The chart is automatically centered on the selected target.

Note : this function does not allow to follow the target but only allows to center the chart on the target position which is selected.

Changing Target's color

By default each target's color is defined by the ECDIS green color but you can change it if you want. Read more about how to change a target's color using the "Options: Targets..." function in MaxSea.

Displaying and changing Target's label

You can display the target label on the chart by selecting [Target Label Displayed on Chart] from the software [Targets] menu.

Label format is defined by default according to the connected equipment, and you can change it under an available list of parameters. Go to the [Targets] menu , select [options: Targets...] and click on the corresponding target you wish to configure.

Note : if you have chosen a non available label n/a appears as the label.

(1) - Target's direction

Except for AIS target that its orientation is represented by the top of the triangle symbol, the orientation for each others targets is represented by a gray straight line as it is shown in pictures above notified by (1).

This relative direction indicates the target's motion assuming their present course (COG) and speed (SOG) remains.

This direction is oriented according to an estimated course and speed of the target.

Note: the target's direction is oriented North up when no COG and SOG are received.

(2) - Target's Vector Display

You can display the symbol targets with one or two vectors lines shown in pictures above by number (2) and

(3).

To set up target vectors:

1.Choose [option: GPS/Track...] from the software [Utilities] menu. The GPS/track settings dialog box appears.

2.Click on [Misc] tab.

3.Check corresponding boxes to activate the vector's direction as you wish between Ground heading, Surface heading and drift vectors.

4.Then set the Vector display mode by choosing the display according either to a fixed length or to a speed variation.

Tips

Right-clicking each target symbol will display an appropriate menu list where you can choose various options:

1.Display the selected target Properties dialog.

2.Delete Target Track/Trail from the chart.

3.Activate the CPA Warning On function.

4.Activate the Track on function.

5.Erase the selected target from the chart.

Targets Layer's Catalog

All categories of target's layer, are grouped in a catalog ordered by system's mobile. The targets layer's catalog allows to access functions like:

1.Showing /Hiding Targets layers.

2.Displaying each target center window.

3.Changing each layer's properties.

4.Targets Advanced Options.

To display the catalog:

Choose [Catalog] from the [Display] or the [Targets] menu in the menu toolbar.

The window's catalog shows you at a glance a list of presently available Mobile's layers in MaxSea.

To choose the layer that you wish to show or hide on chart:

Click the Plus symbol to pull down the Mobile's menu list.

Click in each boxes nearest a layer to specify which layer you wish to display on the chart.

To quickly show or hide together all opened layers:

Click the box nearest the first level folder named "Mobiles".

To display Targets layer's center

Click the Targets layer to display the menu list.

Choose and click "Layer center". The Targets layer's center window for the selected mobile is displayed on the bottom of the screen by default.

To edit a layer's details

Click the Target layer to display the menu list.

Choose and click "Layer options...". The "Layer options..." dialog box for the selected Target is displayed.

Choose and click on the details that you want to edit .

Change each layer options depending to the selected mobile's system. Check boxes, enter value using the keyboard, numeric pad or drop-down lists will be displayed as required.

Click each fields or use the keyboard arrows to move in the dialog box.

Click OK to validate modifying parameters and click Cancel to quit with out modifying.

Targets layer's center

You can obtain more information about each following target from each category of target by displaying its appropriate Mobile center window. You will have a Mobile layer's center for each target layer's category.

Two ways for displaying Mobile layer's center:

1.From the [Targets] menu, select the [Center] option and click a layer category in the available menu list.

2.From the Targets catalog, click under the targets a layer and click again the Center option to display it. Each Mobile center listed all available targets in real time about a specific system

Each lines corresponds to a Mobile target.

Each columns Attributes are displayed by columns.

Mobile target selected on the chart appears between black hook.

To learn more about how to navigate and quickly select for getting specific information in Center's window, refer to related topic : " Center display and controls....".

When available you can have more information about a target by displaying the corresponding [Targets Properties] windows

To sort out by attribute.

Mobile center information can be sorted by attributes by double clicking on the corresponding column heading. When double clicking again on the same column, the order is changed ( increase <=> decrease ).

Targets layer's options

Accessing Targets layer's options:

1.Choose [Option: Targets... ] from the [Targets] menu.

2.Select and click a target category to bring up its layer's options dialog box.

Various informations from targets are displayed and updated in real time. Available default value in depends on the type of target you are displaying properties.

Each Target options are listed below:

1."Time out" : allows you to enter a value when the target is considered as lost.

2.Color allows you to change the colors of each Mobile target's symbol. Use this option to make targets more visible on the chart.

3.PTF: allows you to choose a PTF file to store all the historic information of each target (such as its track).

4.Trail / Track recording interval: allows you to select an appropriate Trail/Track recording interval (null by default).

5.Alarm duration: enter a time interval for triggered alarm

6.Trail observation delay: enter a time value to define when the trail will disappear from the chart.

7.Track observation delay: enter a time value to define when the track will disappear from the chart.

8.Color according to attribute: valid variable track color by default selected as Off.

9.Color settings: allows you to determine the color range.

10.Display label: allows to display the label on the chart.

11.Label format: allows to choose which label you will display on the chart . Choices between each field of target details (see related topic Targets Layer's Center) .

When the Mobile Properties Window is displayed you can see properties of an other target displayed on a chart by a simply clicking with the select tool on it. The Mobile properties Windows will then display the information requested.

Target tracks

Target's Track activation

MaxSea displays targets on the chart , you can record its track in the same way as you would for your ship's track.

Manual Tracking

To activate the track on a Mobile you must :

1.select a target or a series of target using the Select tool

2.either RIGHT CLICK a target to bring up the context menu and choose Track On

3.or for targets selected together, call up the appropriate Mobile center, select targets and click on the center toolbar "Action", choose and click again "Track on"

The target track is saved in the layer "NameTarget.ptf". If it doesn't exist yet MaxSea will create and open it.

When you leave MaxSea a dialog box appears asking you : "Do you want to save the targets tracks of this session" Yes or No.

If Yes then MaxSea will propose to save the target track file as : NameTargets.ptf

Automatically Tracking

The track can be activated automatically for all categories of target. To set general Mobile track option refer to the [Option: GPS and track] paragraph.

The default track color is green but as with any target (buoys) color can be modified according to a target information.

Targets Trails

You can view a target's history directly on the chart which appears as a trail of dots left by the target as it moves. The trail is shown on the chart (4) by green time-spaced dots marking the past positions of any targets. This allows you to evaluate a target's actions by the spacing between dots.

3 - Target's track is shown in the picture against by a green bold straight line.

4 - Target's trail shows all target's movement and it is drawn in green. For example as it is shown in picture, dots are nearest for reduced speed and far for increased speed.

To turn the past position display on or off, choose the

[Display Trail] from the [Targets] menu.

You can also change the display interval of these dots from the selected Target option:

Select [Option: Targets...] from the [Targets] menu.

Choose the desired Mobile layer you wish to configure.

Enter the Trail observation delay (value by default = 30mn).

Cancelling Lost Target

When the program detects a lost target , the target symbol is closed with a cross.

To cancel a lost target displayed on the chart

1.Place the cursor on the target and right click for displaying the contextual menu.

2.Choose Erase in the menu list.

Collision Avoidance

Each target is monitored to determine if it will be within a certain distance (defined by the CPA) from your GPS within a certain time (defined by the TCPA).

CPA & TCPA alarm

When the predicted CPA of any target becomes smaller than a preset CPA alarm range or its predicted TCPA less than a preset TCPA alarm limit, a red triangle symbol appears nearest the target plot symbol. In addition, an audio alarm will sound if you have chosen this option in the settings dialog.

CPA/TCPA alarm ranges must be set up properly taking into consideration the size, speed and other characteristics of own ship.

As it is shown in the following picture with number (1), you can display the distance drawn on chart which corresponds to the collision avoidance between targets and the boat. At any time you can select or unselect [CPA displayed on chart] from the [Targets] menu for showing or hiding it on the chart.

CPA and TCPA information is an available information in each Targets Center and each target's Properties Window.
