PBG Real Time Bathymetry

PBG Real Time and 2D/3D

- this function is included in MaxSea depending on your own software version.

PBG allows to get depth data from a sounder in real time. When the function is activated, the depth data is automatically recorded (in the database) and the 2D and 3D displays are updated in real time in the window chart.

Note: a sounder must be connected and the input/output port must be configured.

The PBG on/off button activate or deactivate the real-time recording of depth data.

When PBG is on, the data is automatically recorded and the 2D and 3D displays are updated as configured. The PBG settings (filter, tide…) can be configured in the 2D/3D properties dialog box.

Access to PBG options:

Select [Option: PBG/2D/3D ] from the [Utilities] menu to open the full dialog box for "PBG / 2D / 3D" options.

Parameters

To modify the Data Import parameters, click on the Parameters button situated in the "Real time import" zone.

MaxSea Operator Manual version 12.6

See the following paragraphs to adjust the parameters:

How to configure the Boat data import.

How to configure the Tide data import.

How to configure the Filter data import. Import scale

Before activating the PBG function, you have to select a scale for importing data (see "How to configure PBG options"). It indicates the precision of the grid on which data will be inserted.

Please pay attention to the following:

Data values will be available from the scale selected up to higher scales, but be careful. If you choose a level which is too high to import data, your disk will fill up quickly. If you choose the "Very High Resolution Bottom Analysis", MaxSea will display a Dialog box to warn you.

Seabed Analysis

No echo sounder is 100% accurate, and echo sounder may send false depth values from time to time. If those values are imported, the 3D database will not be accurate.

I

Select the range of sounding values that will be inserted in the database to enhance it. It is a % value that is explained in the example below.

Example: you choose 20% and import data in a zone where previous sounding values were 100 meters.

All data in the range 80 – 120 meters will be inserted to correct your data base; the other ones will be rejected.

Echo sounder

Choose an immersion value for your Echo Sounder head in case it is not self compensating. It is also important to correct the x,y horizontal offset according to its location in relation to your GPS receiver (positioner).

291

MaxSea Operator Manual version 12.6

Tide

Choose a constant tide value to insert an offset if the tide tables on the zone are not precise.

292

Seabed Analysis

Otherwise, choose a reference harbor for the tide values. The tide values of that harbor will correct the sound data you import. It also works with your former own data.

To choose a reference harbor, select the Choose station button

How to configure PBG options

Select the PBG tab to choose a PBG import resolution (see: Personal Bathy Generator settings)

For example you can choose:

1. "Very High Resolution Bottom Analysis" only on a small area.

293

MaxSea Operator Manual version 12.6

2."Shallow Water" if you are going out daily and when you fish near your harbor.

3."Open Water" when you work far from the shore.

4."Navigation and Prospecting" to get general information about the bottom.

5."Automatic" MaxSea will select the best resolution according to the depth.

Note: by default, the "Automatic" radio button is checked.

Then select the Filters tab

This option allows you :

2D/3D update frequency: allows you to select the time interval between updates of the 2D/3D view. Depending on your needs and computer speed, select a frequency from 1 to a few seconds.

PBG Input frequency: select the time interval in seconds between database updates.

Note: When PBG is on, the echo sounder data is inserted into the database in real time. It is strongly recommended to first set the PGB parameters by clicking the Parameters button (see How to configure the PBG parameters paragraph above). You can select a filter value, a tide correction… that will be active when recording data in real time.

Seabed Analysis

Seabed Analysis

Seabed analysis

- this function is included in MaxSea depending on your own software version.

Connected to a Seabed system the PBG function enables gathering 2D and 3D data providing much more details of ocean floor relief and composition (sand, silt, rock,...).

The software displays and records Roughness (E1) and Hardness (E2) information.

When a Seabed system is connected and PBG is on, the Roughness (E1) and Hardness (E2) data are recorded automatically in the database.

Note:

(1)- Refer you to the related topic PBG Real Time for more information.

(2)- a seabed system must be connected and the input/output port must be configured, see "Connect equipment to MaxSea " for more information.

You will learn in this section:

1.How to display the Roughness or the Hardness data over the chart

2.Display the Seabed Classification Data and graphical palette

3.Changing the Seabed Classification Scale display

4.Activate Tracking on

5.Display the Seabed classification Preferences

6.Configuring a Seabed classification

7.Setting up the Seabed Classification system connected to MaxSea

8.Setting up the Track to the Seabed Configuration

Displaying Roughness (E1)/ Hardness (E2) on the Chart

The software gives you the possibility to display directly on the chart, the Roughness (E1), the Hardness (E2) or the seabed classification according to the available data in the 3D database

Three display modes are available :

Display the Roughness (E1)

295

MaxSea Operator Manual version 12.6

To display the Roughness (E1) information on the chart select the corresponding item from the pop-up

Display the Hardness (E2)

To display the Hardness (E2) information on the chart select the corresponding item from the pop-up.

Seabed Analysis

In this example, one sees that the track color is according to the seabed zone.

To change the Seabed classification configuration click the "Seabed Config" button in the right 2D window.
