THE GERUNDIAL CONSTRUCTIONS
Состоит из существительного в общем или притяжательном падеже или притяжательного местоимения или местоимения в объектном падеже (people — people’s — them — their) и герундия. Герундий выражает действие, а существительное или местоиме-

Инфинитив может быть
1)Подлежащим:
Too learn everything by heart is impossible. What to answer him is unclear.
2)Дополнением: Tell me how to do it.
3)Определением: There’s nothing to argue about here. I’ve got a call to make.
4)Обстоятельством: He came round to ask about her health.
5)Частью сказуемого:
a) после глагола ‘to be”: To hesitate is to lose.
б) после модальных глаголов и их эквивалентов: He can swim. He is sure to come.
в) после глаголов, обозначающих начало действия: He began to learn Dutch.
6) Вводным словом: To tell you the truth, I don’t like the idea.
Примечания:
1. Если два инфинитива соединены союзами “and” или “or”, частица “to” перед вторым инфинитивом опускается:
I want to call Mr Jones and fax or post him a letter.
2. Иногда между частицей “to” и инфинитивом может стоять наречие (Split Infinitive) — это часто встречается в разговорном стиле: I’d like to really understand their position.
3. Bare Infinitive (Инфинитив без частицы “to”) используется:
a)после большинства модальных глаголов: can, must, should, might, may, could. You can leave if you want.
b)после “had better, would rather” . I’d rather not go out tonight, I’d better stay at home.
c)после глаголов “make/ let/ see/ hear/ feel/ notice/ watch”.
They made him pay for the damage.
Однако, если глаголы “make, hear, see, etc, в пассивной форме, за ними следует to+ Infinitive. He was made to pay for the damage.
4. За глаголами “know” и “help” может стоять и to-Infinitive и Bare Infinitive. Could you help me (to) fix the car?
