1 Translate the following word-combinations into Russian:

Data transmission, error-correcting codes, bit stream, IF signal, RF signal, periodic spectrum, harmonic distortion, high-frequency carrier waveform, band pass filtering, equalization filtering, quantization of the amplitudes, digital communication system, digital-to-analog conversion, to limit the bandwidth, frequency or phase value, low pass signal.

2 Answer the following questions:

1 What is the aim of adaption of pulse shaping?

2 What is the result of the high-frequency carrier waveform modulation?

3 What is the aim of amplification and analog band pass filtering?

4 How does the modulator transmit data?

5 What is automatic gain control used for?

6 What does the demodulator perform?

7 What device performs analog-to-digital conversion? and inverse operation?

3 Read the following paragraph. Fill in each blank with a suitable word given below.

Misleading, transmitting, than, the, modem, baud rate, for, to, both, digital, analog, telephone, modulator-demodulator, measure, most, the most, at, per, carried, transmit, take, speed.

The word modem is short for _________. Modulation is the name of the process of converting from ______ to _______. Demodulation is the process of converting from_______to_______. The ______ enables digital microcomputers to communicate across analog ______ lines. _____voice communications and data communications can be ______ over the same telephone line.

The speed with which modems ______data varies. Communications speed is often measured in ______. _______ represents the number of changes in the electrical state in the line____ second. Unfortunately, this measure can be ______. At the low speeds, baud rate is equivalent to bits per second (bps). However, ___ higher speeds, baud rate is not equal ___ bits per second. ___ this reason, _____ communications professionals prefer to ____ modem ____ in bits per second.

_____ popular microcomputer speeds are 1200, 2400, 9600, 14400, 33600, 56600 bps. ____higher the speed, ___ faster your can transmit a document – and therefore ___cheaper your line costs. For example, _____ a 10-page single-spaced report could ____ 5 minutes at 1200 bps. It would ____ 2,5 minutes at 2400 bps and less ____ 40 seconds at 9600 bps.

The three types of modems are external, internal and wireless.

The external modem stands apart from the computer and is connected by a cable to the computer’s serial port. Another cable connects the modem to the telephone wall jack. Some modems weigh as little as 3 ounces, making them practical for use with portable computers.

The internal modem consists of a plug-in circuit board inside the system unit. A cable directly connects the computer’s serial port to the telephone wall jack.

The wireless modem is very similar to the external modem. It connects to the computer’s serial port. Unlike external modems, it doesn’t connect to telephone lines. Rather, wireless modems receive through the air. This is a new type of modem using new technology. Although not as fast as the other modems, wireless modems are becoming popular with users of portable computers.

Not all computer communications require a modem to convert from digital to analog and back. Computer systems connected by coaxial or fiber optic cables can transmit digital data directly through these channels.
