1. balmy – adj - warm and pleasant.
e.g. I forgot to mention that we had a mild, almost balmy day on Saturday.
2. boiling – adj - to be very excited; be stirred up.
e.g. He felt boiling because everybody treated him intolerably.
3. bunting – n - small flags on strings, used to decorate buildings and streets on special occasions.
e.g. A pair of black-headed, white collared reed buntings preened on bracken fronds, their white-edged tails constantly flickering.
4. butt in – vi - to interrupt a conversation rudely.
e.g. Stop butting in!
5. chivvy – vt - to try to make someone do something more quickly, especially in an annoying way.
e.g. Go and see if you can chivvy the kids up a bit.
6. clandestine – adj - done or kept secret.
e.g. Clandestine affairs are hard enough as it is.
7. crunch – vi - to make a sound like something being crushed.
e.g. Their boots crunched loudly on the frozen snow.
8. dump – vt - to end a relationship with someone.
e.g. Vicky dumped Neil yesterday.
9. festoon – vt - to cover something with flowers, long pieces of material etc, especially for decoration.
e.g. Malaga was festooned with banners and flags in honour of the king's visit.
10. Georgian - adj - Georgian buildings, furniture etc come from the 18th century, when Britain was ruled by Kings George the First, Second, and Third.
e.g. One of Britain's most remarkable and characteristic contributions to European culture is her Georgian architecture.
11. get by – vi - to have enough money to buy the things you need, but no more.
e.g. I don't earn a huge salary, but we get by.
12. glamour - n - he attractive and exciting quality of being connected with wealth and success.
e.g. Actress Marlene Dietrich was once the ultimate symbol of glamour and elegance.
13. hideous – adj - extremely unpleasant or ugly.
e.g. This criminal is a hideous monster.
14. linchpin – n - the person or thing in a group, system etc that is most important, because everything depends on them.
e.g. Apparently she accepted that she was the primary caretaker of her children and the linchpin of family life.
15. memo – n - a short official note to another person in the same company or organization.
e.g. I sent him a memo reminding him about the meeting.
16. moron – n - a very offensive word for someone who you think is very stupid.
e.g. Most media companies assume members of the general public are morons.
17. nettle – vt - to sting the mind of; irritate; provoke; vex.
e.g. She was nettled by Holman's remark.
18. oblivious – adj - not knowing about or not noticing something that is happening.
e.g. In the sitcom she plays a New York executive who's totally oblivious to the feelings of others.
19. quiche – n - a pie without a top, filled with a mixture of eggs, cheese, vegetables etc.
e.g. Put the quiche on a baking sheet and place on the bottom rack of the oven.
20. redeem – vt - to make something less bad.
e.g. Olivier's performance redeemed an otherwise second-rate play.
21. savour – vt - to fully enjoy the taste or smell of something.
e.g. She sipped her wine, savouring every drop.
22. shaggy – adj - long and untidy.
e.g. I imagined the shaggy beast confused, not knowing which of us to chase.
23. step out – vi - to go out for entertainment.
e.g. We're celebrating by stepping out tonight.
24. stubble – n - short stiff hairs that grow on a man's face if he does not shave.
e.g. I could hear his hand moving over the stubble of his beard.
25. turnover – n - the amount of business done during a particular period.
e.g. Turnover at the two restaurants was about $7.4 million this year.
