Departments and Degrees Overview
The UCLA School of Public Health is comprised of five departments: Biostatistics, Community Health Sciences, Environmental Health Sciences, Epidemiology, and Health Services. In addition, there are two interdepartmental programs housed at the school: Environmental Science and Engineering and Molecular Toxicology.
Two different types of degrees are offered to prepare students for their chosen roles:
Professional Degrees which are the MPH (Master of Public Health) and DrPH (Doctor of Public Health). Programs leading to these degrees emphasize solving public health problems by applying professional disciplinary approaches and methods in a professional environment such as local, state or national public health agencies and health care organizations. These degrees are administered on a school-wide basis with specialization in a particular department.
Academic Degrees which are the MS (Master of Science) and PhD (Doctor of Philosophy). These degrees are intended to prepare students for research roles and settings, with programs that emphasize understanding of theoretical issues and the application of disciplinary methods to the study of public health problems in other than professional settings such as academic institutions and research institutes. Academic Degrees are offered and administered by each individual department.
Students must choose a department to specialize in regardless of the degree selected.
Getting to Know ucla
The UCLA campus is like a city in miniature, with our own restaurants, stores, museums and swimming pools. Classroom, labs and libraries bustle with activity. Gardens and plazas add to the welcoming feel. And in the evening and on weekends there are public events that attract audiences from all over Los Angeles: music, dance, lectures and NCAA sports.
Student life
Yes, UCLA students spend a lot of time studying. But there’s s a lot of learning that happens outside the classroom, from discovering new interests and friends to cheering the Bruins at the Rose Bowl. Student groups get together to celebrate Tet nad Nowruz, share a luau and learn taiko drumming and kendo.
Living on Campus
Fully 94% of freshmen live on campus, in the residential area nicknamed “The Hill”. It’s a short walk to classes or the library. And after class, there’s the nearby Suset Canyon Recreation Center for swimming or tennis. Then, a choice of dining halls. (Yes, you can eat with friends from another residence hall, or just check on line to find which location is serving the food you like best).
Financial Aid
More than half of UCLA undergraduates receive some kind of financial aid or scholarship, with an average award of 17,000.
Тема 2. Institutions of higher education in russia text 1. Higher education system in russia
Russia has a long-standing tradition in high-quality education for all citizens. It probably has also one of the best mass-education systems in the world producing a literacy rate (98%) exceeding most Western European countries. Education is split into a compulsory Basic Education, and ongoing Higher Education.
Higher Education
Higher education is provided by public and non-public (non-State) accredited higher education institutions. There are two levels of higher education:
• Basic higher education (4 years) leading to the Bakalavr's degree, the first university level degree. This is equivalent to the B.Sc. degree in the US or Western Europe.
• Postgraduate higher education (5-6 years or more). After two years, students are entitled to receive a Magist’'s degree. This is equivalent to a Master’s Degree (M.Sc, M.A.) in the US or Western Europe. After a Master’s degree, students can continue to study towards a doctoral degree: Kandidat Nauk degree (the first level, equivalent to Ph.D.) and Doktor Nauk degree (the second, highest level, equivalent to Professor).
Holders of the Bakalavr's (Bachelor) degree are admitted to enter the Magistr’s (Master’s) degree programmes. Access to these programmes is competitive. The Magistr’s (Master’s) degree is awarded after successful completion of two years’ full-time study. Students must carry out a year of research including practice and prepare and defend a thesis which constitutes an original contribution and sit for final examinations.
Access to the Kandidat Nauk (Aspirantura) level again is very competitive. Candidates must hold a Specialist Diploma or a Magistr’s degree. Studies last for 3 years. The Aspirantura prepares for research and professorial activities. Students must learn teaching methods, ICTs, and pass qualifying (Kandidat Nauk) exams. They carry out independent research, prepare and defend a dissertation in public. They are then awarded the scientific degree of Kandidat Nauk. The Doctor Nauk programme is specific and its duration is not fixed. It follows the Kandidat Nauk and is awarded after preparation and public defence of a dissertation.
