The Spoken English Skills Intermediate is designed to teach students to use the English language in situations such as when visiting new places, talking about your organisation and running a restaurant. Students can make use of their prior knowledge and experience when describing job responsibilities, drafting an email and advising and recommending. This course enhances people management and communication skills of the students.

The student book comprises conversations, reading exercises, extensive grammar exercises, activities and listening exercises. It contains creative and interesting visuals to introduce vocabulary. The book also covers extensive exercises for the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing as well as exercises to practise pronunciation and to build vocabulary.

The student book contains the transcripts/audio scripts of the audio CD and the answers to the exercise questions at the end of the book. It also contains the feedback form. The audio CD available with the book contains conversations, pronunciation exercises and listening activities all recorded with the required accents.

1.1 Working with an International Team

1.1.1 Interview with a Fashion Merchandiser

Listen to Natalya talking about her work experience in New York. Interviewer: So what do you do Natalya?

Natalya: I work in New York as a fashion merchandiser. My job is to make fashion easily accessible to people.

Interviewer: Sounds interesting! Is it a lot of work?

Natalya: Yes, I need to come up with ideas on the best way to sell new fashion merchandise and how to position them to attract maximum customers.

Interviewer: Do you have many customers?

Natalya: Yes we have a huge demand in the American and European markets. And to meet the increasing global demand, we are expanding our business in the Asia-Pacific region as well.

Interviewer: Looks like business is doing well. Do you travel outside of the US?

Natalya: Yes I do. I visit France, Italy, Germany and Brazil quite often. I also travel to Asian countries

like India, Singapore and Thailand.

Interviewer: Must be quite hectic. What challenges do you face?

Natalya: Well, apart from the travel, the biggest challenge is that I have to co-ordinate with my team spread across the globe and find creative ways to reach consumers. I also need to figure out what the next big fashion trend might be.

Interviewer: So, where are you from Natalya?

Natalya: I am from Russia. I moved to New York 10 years ago. I love it here. The atmosphere and pace of the city is infectious.

Interviewer: Have you learnt any foreign languages?

Natalya: Well, I know Russian and I am learning French right now. However I prefer to speak and work in English as it is a universal language. Everybody speaks English!!

Interviewer: So, are you happy with your job?

Natalya: Oh yes! I work with a great team. I have friends across the globe and so I get to learn about different cultures. My team comprises a German, one lady from France, a guy from Spain, two guys from UK and one guy from Brazil.

Interviewer: Really?

Natalya: Yes, it’s very international. Though work gets hectic and hard at times, the people I work with are really nice. So yes, I love my job.

1.2 Present Simple and Present Continuous

1.2.1 Definition

Simple Present tense is used for actions and situations that are not temporary such as regular routines or habits.

Examples:

I go to office every day.

He travels abroad quite often.She drinks tea in the morning.

Present Continuous tense is used to describe actions and situations that are happening at the time of speaking.

Examples:

I am talking on the telephone.She is going for a walk.

Prices of vegetables are falling.

1.2.2 Exercise

Identify whether the highlighted text in the sentences are Present Simple or Present Continuous.
