7.1.2 Conversation

Maria: Good morning! I’m Maria Parker. Jose: Hi! I’m Jose Gonzales.

Maria: Thank you so much for agreeing to interview with us for our radio show.

Jose: Oh, that’s no problem.

Maria: So, is this your first time in Germany? Jose: That’s right!

Maria: Where are you from?

Jose: Well, I’m from Mexico but I have spent the last few years in Turin, Italy.

Maria: That’s interesting! Tell us more about it.

Jose: Well, I studied automobile engineering and worked for a year in Mexico. Then, I moved to Turin where I worked with Fiat for 6 years. While working with Fiat, I was offered this job at the BMW plant in Munich. That’s how I’m here.

Maria: What made you move from Mexico?

Jose: I grew up there. But the opportunity to work with a better car manufacturer helped me decide.

Maria: That’s nice! So how’s the work culture in Germany different from Italy and Mexico?

Jose: In Germany, punctuality is taken extremely seriously. If you are going to be late, you must phone immediately and explain. In Italy, while some people see time as money and are rather prompt, you may find some that take a more leisurely approach. Mexicans, they are not as rigid about punctuality. The culture is more about fun.

Maria: What about all the people you met and worked with?

Jose: Mexicans are very warm and friendly people and don’t take too long to open up. Personal relationships and connections are important for facilitating business.

Somewhat similar are the Italians who prefer to do business with people they know and trust. Italians are extremely expressive communicators and tend to be loud, emotional and demonstrative.

In Germany, academic credentials are given the most importance and a personal relationship is not required to do business. Germans take a long time to open up and are usually quite direct. They believe a lot in written communication to maintain a record of discussions.

Maria: What’s your preferred management style?

Jose: I like to be approachable and friendly and yet remain organised and focussed. I set up meetings in advance and publish the agenda for all attendees. This enables people to come prepared. Meetings remain formal, start and end on time and things get done faster. My learning experience in Germany has been the most inspiring.

Maria: And when it comes to food, what is different here?

Jose: I miss my family and friends back home. I grew up on Mexican food and yes, I miss it. Out of the two, Italy and Germany, I’d say Italian food is tastier but cakes and pastries in Germany are to die for. In Mexico, breakfast is the heaviest meal. People usually don’t have anything after that and eat their evening meals early.

Maria: Thank you very much for making time for us.

Jose: Thank you for having me here. Have a good day!

8.1 Impact of Globalisation on Trade and Economy

We interviewed Gavin D’Souza, the expert on trade and economy. Gavin’s views on the various aspects of globalisation of trade and economy are given here.

8.1.2 Views on Globalisation

A.Gavin says globalisation leads to the integration of national economies into the international economy through trade, foreign direct investment

and capital flows. It is driven by a combination of economic policies and technological, socio cultural and political factors.

B.Gavin believes that although globalisation has been a catalyst for advancements, it creates challenges and problems that require significant adjustments. For instance, the World Bank works with developing countriesto helpthem prepare forglobal integration. It lends money to developing countries to better their infrastructure. Most multinational companies

(MNCs) belonging to developed countries take on these projects and consequently profit. Developing countries benefit too but they also end up with huge debts. Although Gavin is not too interested in politics, he feels that the governments of these countries must cooperate for
