light-weight driver with much greater performance. The greatest breakthrough in golf was the use of titanium in driver heads. Titanium is significantly lighter than iron or steel and therefore, allows the making of larger head and increases the sweet spot

allowing players to hit the ball to a longer distance.

3.The only trouble with this driver is that titanium is very expensive and out of reach for many amateurs. The answer to this problem came with the use of carbon and other light-weight materials in combination with titanium. These are called composite drivers.

4.The crown of the club or sometimes the entire rear section of the club is made from carbon with just the face made from titanium. The strength of the titanium face easily drives the ball across long distances on contact. Since the overall weight is reduced, the club head can become larger and help players to achieve greater precision in each hit. The latest development is the less expensive and more accurate driver that has taken the popularity of the game to new heights.

Beliza is a food expert who loves to try different cuisines. Listen to her talk about Sri Lankan food.

24.3.1 Conversation

Beliza: Fantastic! I’ve been to Sri Lanka before, but this time I tried a few more traditional and rare dishes.

Interviewer: So what is Sri Lankan food like?

118

Spoken English Skills Intermediate

© 2011 Aptech Limited

Beliza: It’s mainly rice with different kinds of curries. The sheer variety of curries can seem mind-numbing to a westerner. They make curry with fish, meat, chicken, beef or pork. They also have several curries made of vegetables, lentils and believe it or not, even fruit.

Interviewer: So what do they taste like?

Beliza: Well, Sri Lanka is a land of spices. For many centuries, invaders from different parts of the world brought along with them their regional flavours and spices and they are all a part of Sri Lankan cuisine now. So the curries are spicy and also coconut-flavoured.

Interviewer: Are they very spicy?

Beliza: Depending on the region and preparation, they can be. Make sure to ask for a less spicy version if you cannot handle too much heat! You can always end the meal with a sweet like kavun, dodol or aggala. But my favourite is bibbikan, a rich cake-like sweet made from coconut, treacle and flour.

24.3.2 Exercise

Based on Beliza’s interview, state whether the following statements are true or false.

1.This was Beliza’s first trip to Sri Lanka. _____________ (True/False)

2.Corn is the chief grain eaten in Sri Lanka. _____________ (True/False)

3.Aggala is Beliza’s favourite sweet. _____________ (True/False)

24.3.3 Exercise

Listen to the interview again and answer these questions.

1.What was different about Beliza’s latest trip to Sri Lanka?

2.What kind of curry does Beliza find surprising? Which phrase tells you that?

3.What does she suggest westerners should do to play it safe when travelling to Sri Lanka?
