their countries to gain.

C.Some others feel that globalisation has helped developing countries like China and India fight poverty. The numbers are significant. While in China the poverty rate has fallen from 60% -16%, in India and Vietnam by 50% and in Uganda by 40%. Economic integration benefitted poor farmers who were able to raise the prices of products. Out of the developing countries, Vietnam and India have become big coffee exporters.

D.Gavin also talks about the impact of globalisation on oil demand and the ever growing need to use oil, gas and coal to generate energy. It is, therefore, not surprising that some of world’s largest MNCs are oil companies. For one, globalisation has also boosted travel. The percentage of the world population that travelled 25 years back is several times lesser than the percentage of population that travels now.

E.The most concerning aspect Gavin says is the climate change that globalisation has brought about. By burning fossil fuels such as oil, coal and gas and clearing forests the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have increased at an accelerated pace, which is not a good thing. Some environmentally friendly measures will need to be adopted soon.

F.A huge downside of globalisation has been the growing unemployment rate in developing countries. Although businesses invest a lot of money in its employees, competitive pressure forces them to move some jobs to developing countries. Most jobs available to job seekers in developing countries are those that pay less. Gavin says he pays a lot of interest on his bank loan. Not just for that but also to gain international work experience, he would like to work in a developing country, perhaps Vietnam.

8.1.3 Exercise

Match the statements with answers in the paragraphs provided.

1.Farmers have been able to sell their products at better rates.

2.Climate change is a serious matter and should be given due attention.

3.The number of poor people in developing countries has reduced.

4.The outsourcing of work to developing countries has increased.

5.Developing countries are being helped in building a foundation for global integration.

8.1.4 Opinion

Now, that you know about Gavin’s views on globalisation, do you agree with him? What do you think can help improve matters?
