12.2 All about Ecotourism

12.2.1 Opinion

Is tourism bad for the environment or can it have a positive impact? What is ecotourism?

12.2.2 Conversation

Listen to what this volunteer has to say about Raleigh project.

Operation Raleigh started as a 4 year project running from 1984 -1988 involving 4,000 volunteers and almost 1,600 staff on the

renovated Sir Walter Raleigh ship with an emphasis on land-based expeditions. Operation Raleigh became Raleigh International in 1992, reflecting the number of volunteers from across the globe to raise awareness.

Over 30,000 people have taken an expedition with us and we continue to work with youth agencies and membership organisations to inspire people from all walks of life. We realise our expeditions have an impact on local, regional and global environments and strive to manage our resource use so that it contributes to sustainable development.

Flights are integral to our expeditions, so we ensure the value of our work on projects offsets the carbon emissions of the travel. Every environmental project we run provides at least 2 years of labour to the conservation

efforts. We also donate and plant trees in the Miraflor Reserve in Nicaragua, creating biological corridors.

Over the past 20 years we’ve undertaken environmental research with the European Union, Natural History Museum and Royal Geographical Society to gain valuable information to help develop our management plan and support environments at risk.

All our volunteers are trained on how to minimise their environmental footprint whilst on expedition. We also educate volunteers on the culture and development of the local communities. We do this through discussions and talks from local NGOs as well as staff on the ground.

We strive to increase awareness of good environmental practice with all our staff through training, communications and constantly appraising working methods and techniques. Facilities are available so staff can recycle and cycle to work. Our publications strategy is primarily electronic to minimise printing and paper use.

The learner will be able to:

Discuss financial plans.Use different future forms.

Use contracted forms of pronouns and auxiliary verbs.

13.1 Financial Planning

Every year, companies spend considerable time and money on chalking out future plans. Do you think this is an important task? Why?

13.2 Making Plans for an Organisation’s New Financial Year

Meet Molly, Bill and Oliver. They work for a leading mobile phone company in the UK. They are discussing about the financial plans for the forthcoming financial year.

Oliver: We need to plan the next financial year so that we can come out of the problems that have plagued the company this last year. The launch of B-317

has not been very encouraging and that is a problem.

Bill: My team and I are going to review the market to see if the product needs any modifications.

Oliver: I feel the product is quite good in itself. It has some really good features and functions. The general recession is the reason it didn’t do well in the last quarter.

Molly: I agree. Maybe we should increase the budget

for marketing. That will help us reach out to the right people. The sales is not going to pick up otherwise.
