VI.Read the text, translate it and put all possible questions: loads of gold from st. Pete

by Andrei Poskakukhin The Moscow News

Amstelhof, a cluster of quaint old buildings in Amsterdam, is offering the public a Hermitage "offshoot" and a show called The Greek Gold. It took the initiators of this ambitious project, Hermitage director Mikhail Piotrovsky and De Nieuwe Kerk Museum director Ernst Veen, 14 years and four million euros raised thanks to numerous sponsors. Today, the 17th-century building, originally an old peoples home, boasts six smallish halls with a total floor space of 600 sq m. The Hermitage is showing here its first exhibit, The Greek Gold. According to Mikhail Piotrovsky, his museum has one of the three best collections of Ancient Greek gold (the other two are property of the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art). The Hermitage collection very rarely goes on public display. The show comprises over 100 items by Ancient Greek goldsmiths of the 6th and 2nd centuries B.C. These are fine gold chains, bracelets, rings decorated with images of people and animals, a big wreath of gold leaves and fruit, dishes, bowls, amphorae... All of these rarities were discovered by Russian archeologists in the 19th and 20th centuries in Russias southern areas that used to be Greek colonies. The six halls of the Hermitage branch are just the first phase of the project. There are plans to have the whole of Amstelhof renovated by 2007, and then the exhibition area will expand to more than 4,000 square meters. That will provide enough space for showing large canvases. It is expected that the upkeep of the building will be covered by sponsor donations and box-office takings. Incidentally, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg will get one euro from every ticket sold here. Mr. Veen, the Amstelhof director, is confident that his museum will receive 40,000 visitors annually, and closer to 200,000 when its entire exhibition area is used. The Greek Gold exhibit will run till August 29, 2004. After that the Hermitage intends to show in its first branch in Europe an exhibit of imperial memorabilia connected with Russias last czar Nicholas II and his family. The museum is thinking of sending to Amsterdam personal belongings, letters, and photographs of the emperor and his spouse. Other items on display will include some rare pieces from art collections once owned by Russias last imperial couple.
