Text 1. Tranquillizer
Read and translate. Прочитайте и переведите текст
Picture 1. Medications related to tranquillizers
Tranquillizer, drug that is used to reduce anxiety, fear, tension, agita-
tion, and related states of mental disturbance. Tranquilizers fall into two
main classes, major and minor. Major tranquilizers, which are also known as
antipsychotic agents, or neuroleptics, are so called because they are used
to treat major states of mental disturbance in schizophrenics and other psychotic patients. By contrast, minor tranquilizers, which are also known as
antianxiety agents, or anxiolytics, are used to treat milder states of anxiety
and tension in healthy individuals or people with less serious mental disorders. The major and minor tranquilizers bear only a superficial resemblance
to each other, and the trend has been to drop the use of the word tranquilizer altogether in reference to such drugs, though the term persists in popular usage.
Major tranquilizers are highly selective in alleviating the delusions,
hallucinations, and disordered thinking of schizophrenics and other psychotic patients. The drugs return agitated, excited, and irrational patients to
a state of rational calm, and they have enabled many seriously ill people
who would otherwise be hospitalized to live at home and engage in productive work. Major tranquilizers do not cure schizophrenia but merely

suppress its symptoms, and they are usually prescribed on a long-term basis. The basic types are the phenothiazines, thioxanthines, butyrophenones,
clozapine, and rauwolfia alkaloids. The phenothiazines are the most widely
used of these and include the drug chlorpromazine. They are thought to
work by blocking the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain. This leads to
a reduction of psychotic symptoms but can also result in such unwanted
side effects as tremors of the limbs, rigidity, restlessness, and involuntary
spasms of the facial muscles, tongue, and lips.The thioxanthines and the
butyrophenones, chief among which is haloperidol (Haldol), are similar to
the phenothiazines. Another drug, clozapine, whose exact mode of action
remains unclear relieves schizophrenic symptoms in some patients who are
not helped by phenothiazines. Clozapine lacks the side effects of the phenothiazines but tends to induce an infectious disease known as agranulocytosis. The rauwolfia alkaloids, such as reserpine, are no longer in common use.
Task 1. Answer the following questions
1. What is tranquilizer?
2.Tranquilizers fall into two main classes, aren’t they?
3. Tell the difference between major and minor tranquilizers.
4. Are antianxiety agents, or anxiolytics also called minor tranquilizers?
5. Do major tranquilizers cure schizophrenia?
Task 2. Read and translate the following statement and say if it is
true or false
1. Tranquillizer is a drug that is used to reduce anxiety, fear, tension,
agitation, and related states of mental disturbance.
2. Major tranquilizers are highly selective in alleviating the delusions,
hallucinations, and disordered thinking of schizophrenics and other psychotic patients.
3. Minor tranquilizers, which are also known as antipsychotic agents,
or neuroleptics.
4. The basic types of minor tranquilizers are the phenothiazines, thioxanthines, butyrophenones, clozapine, and rauwolfia alkaloids.
5. Clozapine lacks the side effects of the phenothiazines but tends to
induce an infectious disease known as agranulocytosis.

Text 2. Antibiotics
Read and translate. Прочитайте и переведите текст
Picture 2. Oral antibiotics and antibiotics used for inhections
Antibiotics are medicines that fight bacterial infections in people and
animals. They work by killing the bacteria or by making it hard for the bacteria to grow and multiply.
Antibiotics can be taken in different ways
• Orally (by mouth). This could be pills, capsules, or liquids.
• Topically. This might be a cream, spray, or ointment that you put
on your skin. It could also be eye ointment, eye drops, or ear drops.
• Through an injection or intravenously (I.V). This is usually for more
serious infections.
Antibiotics only treat certain bacterial infections, such as strep
throat, urinary tract infections, and E. coli. You may not need to take antibiotics for some bacterial infections. For example, you might not need them
for many sinus infections or some ear infections. Taking antibiotics when
they're not needed won't help you, and they can have side effects. Your
health care provider can decide the best treatment for you when you're
sick. Don't ask your provider to prescribe an antibiotic for you.
7

Antibiotics do not work on viral infections. For example, you shouldn't take antibiotics for:
• сolds and runny noses, even if the mucus is thick, yellow, or green;
• most sore throats (except strep throat);
• flu;
• most cases of bronchitis.
The side effects of antibiotics range from minor to very severe. Some
of the common side effects include:
• rash;
• nausea;
• diarrhea;
• yeast infections.
More serious side effects can include:
• complex different infections, which causes diarrhea that can lead
to severe colon damage and sometimes even death;
• severe and life-threatening allergic reactions;
• antibiotic resistance infections.
Call your health care provider if you develop any side effects while
taking your antibiotic.You should only take antibiotics when they are needed because they can cause side effects and can contribute to antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance happens when the bacteria change and become able to resist the effects of an antibiotic. This means that the bacteria
continue to grow.
How do I use antibiotics correctly?
When you take antibiotics, it is important that you take them responsibly:
• Always follow the directions carefully. Finish your medicine even if
you feel better. If you stop taking them too soon, some bacteria may survive and re-infect you.
• Don't save your antibiotics for later.
• Don't share your antibiotic with others.
8

• Don't take antibiotics prescribed for someone else. This may delay
the best treatment for you, make you even sicker, or cause side effects.
Task 1. Answer the following questions
1. What are antibiotics?
2. What do antibiotics treat?
3. How can antibiotics be taken?
4. Do antibiotics treat viral infections?
5. Why is it important to take antibiotics only when they're needed?
Task 2. Read and translate the following statement and say if it is
true or false
1. Antibiotics are medicines that fight bacterial infections in people
and animals.
2. Some of the common side effects of antibiotics include: rheuma-
tism, angina pectoris, nervous breakdown.
3.You must mot take antibiotics prescribed for someone else. This
may delay the best treatment for you, make you even sicker, or cause side
effects.
4. Antibiotics can be taken in 2 different ways – orally and intravenously.
5. Death is one of the severe side effects of antibiotics.

Text 3. Vitamins
Read and translate. Прочитайте и переведите текст
Picture 3. Fruit and vegetables which contain different vitamins
Micronutrients are the vitamins and minerals found in food that nourish your body and help keep you healthy. They are essential to your overall
health.
Choosing foods each day that are rich in vitamins and minerals is the
best way for your body to get what it needs to be healthy. However, research consistently finds that most Americans don’t get enough vitamins
and minerals in their diets.
Vitamin A is associated with vision development and cellular growth and
maintenance. Adults should get 700–900 micrograms of Vitamin A per day.
The following foods are good sources of vitamin A: organ meats, such
as liver and giblets; vegetables: sweet potatoes, pumpkin, carrots, spinach,
turnip greens, cantaloupe. helps the body form collagen (which is the main
protein used as connective tissue in the body) in blood vessels, bones, cartilage, and muscle. Adults should get 65–90 milligrams of Vitamin C per day.
The following foods are good sources of vitamin C: fruits (guava, oranges, kiwi, strawberries, cantaloupe, papaya, pineapple, mango); vegeta-
