Text B. CIVIL AND CRIMINAL LAW (continued)
In many law systems it is important that a person is not guilty of a crime
until the state proves that he is guilty. The person doesn’t need to prove anything.
He can show evidence of his innocence.
Most criminal laws do with acts of violence or theft. But there are laws
which regulate all possible situations: what we do with our land, for example; what
we say and write; how we run our business, etc.
There are some acts which are crimes in one country but aren’t in another.
For example, it is a crime to drink alcohol in Saudi Arabia, but not in Egypt. It is a
crime to smoke marijuana in England, but not in the Netherlands. It is a crime to
have more than one wife in France, but not in Indonesia.

Alice says, “She wears white because she is happy.”
“That’s good, Alice,” Mrs. Brown says. “You are right.”
But then one of the boys in the class puts his hand up.
“Yes, John?” Mrs. Brown says. “Do you want to ask a question?”
“Yes, please.” John says. “Why do men wear black in this country when
they get married?”

A crime is a wrong act which the state punishes. A person who commits a
crime is a criminal. A criminal breaks the law.
A murderer
kills people. This is a murder. A murderer is a criminal.
An assassin kills people for political reasons.
A terrorist uses violence for political reasons. Terrorists take hostages. They
often kill them.
Sometimes terrorists organize explosions in public places for political
reasons.
A hijacker takes control of a plane by force. He forces the pilot to take him
where he wants. It is a criminal act.
A kidnapper takes people by force to get money for their return. It is a
criminal act.
A drug dealer buys and sells drugs illegally.
A drug smuggler
carries drugs into another country illegally.

Text B. CRIMINOLOGY
A science which studies crimes and criminals is criminology. Criminology
also studies problems which make crimes. Criminology wants to know reasons of
crimes and why criminals commit crimes. Criminologists help lawyers, judges and
prison officials. Some criminologists think that criminals are born with criminality.
Other criminologists think that some people become criminals because of bad life.
